🍙 Dried seaweed refers to algae harvested from the sea, cleaned, and subsequently dried to extend their shelf life. In Asian cuisine, dried seaweed is commonly used in sushi, soups, salads, and broths. Dried seaweed is rich in nutrients - such as: 🟢 Vitamins 🟢 Minerals, e.g. iodine, which is crucial for the function of the thyroid gland and hormone regulation However, due to its ability to absorb contaminants like heavy metals from its environment, regular monitoring of #DriedSeaweed is essential to ensure quality and safety. ⚠️ According to the monitoring conducted in 2023 by the German Federal Office of Consumer Protection and #FoodSafety, 10% of the monitored samples contained lead levels exceeding 0.4 mg/kg, cadmium above 3.3 mg/kg, and copper above 8.52 mg/kg. Additionally, 10% showed arsenic levels higher than 37.6 mg/kg. 🇪🇺 In the European Union, the legal maximum levels for heavy metals in food are defined by Regulation (EC) No. 1881/2006. For dried seaweed for use in food supplements, a maximum content of 3.0 mg/kg of cadmium of dry matter applies. There are currently no specific maximum levels for lead, copper and arsenic in dried seaweed. However, the introduction of a legal maximum level is being discussed and is the subject of current consultations on consumer health protection. 🏷️ Out of 82 #Seaweed samples analyzed, 75 had iodine levels exceeding 20 mg per kilogram of dry mass, requiring a warning label about potential thyroid function issues from excessive iodine intake. However, 10 of these 75 samples lacked the mandatory warning label. 🔬 Our #Laboratories make sure that limit values for dried seaweed are not exceeded and that its content and labeling comply with the applicable legal requirements. We carry out all necessary analyses and ensure rapid order processing. 📧 Contact us for more information: food@tentamus.com

🆕 The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) has updated maximum levels for the use of #folic acid in foods and food supplements. #Folate, a vital water-soluble vitamin, is found in both animal and plant foods, such as green vegetables, pulses, whole grains, citrus fruits, egg yolk, and liver. Folic acid, the synthetic form of folate, can be used in food supplements and for fortifying foods in the EU. The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) last proposed maximum levels in 2021, and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) revised its risk assessment on folate/folic acid in 2023. The BfR used the updated EFSA opinion to revise the proposed maximum levels. For #FoodSupplements, the BfR recommends a maximum of 200 micrograms (µg) of folic acid per daily intake, or an equivalent amount of other approved folate sources. However, for women of childbearing age and pregnant women in the first trimester, a supplementation of 400 µg of folic acid per day or an equivalent amount of other approved folate sources is still recommended to reduce the risk of NRD in children. Clear labeling and targeted communication are essential for appropriately dosed products. 📧 For more information, please contact food@tentamus.com

5 Food Ingredients I ALWAYS say NO to by Naturopath Cathey Painter #1. High Fructose Corn Syrup This is an artificial sweetener made from corn, and they are NOT making it from organic corn. The corn they are making it from is a GMO corn that is heavily sprayed with glyphosate, the pesticide that has been shown to cause cancer, gut issues, and many other health issues. HFCS provides an unnatural amount of fructose and has been linked to an increased risk of diabetes, non alcoholic fatty liver disease, obesity and weight gain. HFCS has been shown to drive inflammation, which is a contributing factor to the development of cancer and accelerated aging. #2 Trans Fats According to the WHO consuming trans fats increases death rate from all causes by a whopping 34% and coronary heart disease by 28%. While there are small amounts of trans fats that occur naturally in meat and dairy, the majority of trans fats come from the "man made by industrialization of partial hydrogenation". The #1 reason these partially hydrogenated oils aka trans fats are used in food is because they have an indefinite shelf life. Back in the 1950s a famous German scientist Dr. Johanna Budwig argued that highly heated and chemically modified fats (trans fats) found primarily in margarine at the time, were dangerous to human health. Her expertise was ignored and today trans fats are found in thousands of packaged foods and many people have unknowingly suffered the health consequences. #3 Artificial Sweeteners Aspartame, saccharin, and sucralose are chemicals used to reduce calorie content in foods and beverages. I never will forget watching the 60 minutes broadcast segment on Aspartame. Mike Wallace interviewed several neurologists who talked about an unusual increase in brain cancer that corresponded to the FDA approval of Aspartame in the 1980s. Interestingly that episode is now nowhere to be found. The Ramazzini Institute in Italy did a study on Aspartame on rats and found consumption of aspartame causes an increase in cancerous tumors in multiple organs. All artificial sweeteners are chemicals that should be avoided. #4 Preservatives (such as Nitrates) These chemical preservatives are commonly found in processed meats such as bacon, lunch meats, hot dogs and sausages. They are used to lengthen shelf life. High consumption of processed meats has been linked to cancer for years. The good news is that now you can find processed meats that do NOT use chemical preservatives. #5 Artificial Food Colorings Artificial food colorings are used in place of natural food colorings because they are cheaper. Today most artificial food colorings are made from petroleum, which is very concerning. Many parents have reported hyperactivity when their children consume foods that contain artificial food colorings.

Meow! 🐱🐱🐱 Today is International Cat Day! 😸 At Tentamus, we ensure a healthy life for our feline friends by rigorously testing cat food properties and monitoring its production process. 😻 Quality controls are essential to maintain feed safety, as set by Regulation 767/2009, which oversees the marketing and use of feed, providing better information for consumers. 🐈 Some of the feed testing we perform in our labs includes: 🐾 Marketability testing 🐾 Residue and contaminant testing 🐾 Chemical assessment 🐾 Microbiological safety The European Pet Food Industry Federation (FEDIAF) sets guidelines for complete and complementary cat foods, ensuring a balanced and healthy diet. We compare cat food nutrient contents with FEDIAF recommendations to ensure optimal concentrations of proteins, vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids for cat nutrition. 🐈⬛ Additionally, we perform the Weender analysis, which tests cat food for crude ash, protein, fat, fiber, and nitrogen-free extractives. These components must be declared on the packaging to ensure transparency and quality. 😺 If you would like more details about our cat food analyses, contact us: 📧 hello@tentamus.com #Cat #InternationalCatDay #PetFood #CatNutrition

𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲. The novel food catalogue has been updated for milk thistle (𝑆𝑖𝑙𝑦𝑏𝑢𝑚 𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑢𝑚). The oil from the seed is still noted as not novel in food. However, while aerial parts were already considered as not novel in food supplements, the catalogue now recognizes that acetone extract from the fruit, containing 70-80% silymarin, are also not novel in food supplements. This means that other extracts using other solvents, or extract with different silymarin levles may be considered novel. #Novelfood #Milkthistle #Botanical #Foodregulation
