Employee Benefits Compliance Question of the week Summary of Benefits & Coverage (SBC) and Uniform Glossary The ACA requires all employers that sponsor group health plans (regardless of size and ALE status) to provide Summaries of Benefits and Coverage (SBCs) to all applicants upon initial eligibility and again at renewal or Open Enrollment. These SBCs are uniform across all carriers and virtually all plans in the individual and small group markets. The uniformity of these documents allows consumers to compare plans logically to others. Health insurance carriers are responsible for creating SBCs for their health plans. Employers with self-funded plans are generally required to create their own SBCs. In addition to the Summary of Benefits and Coverage (SBC), employers (of any size) sponsoring group health plans are required to distribute a Uniform Glossary of Coverage and Medical Terms to help employees and consumers understand all items and information listed in the SBC. The Uniform Glossary is available from the Department of Labor at DOL.gov. In addition to ACA requirements, most employers sponsoring health plans are also required to create and distribute Summary Plan Descriptions (SPDs) for plans under ERISA law. #employeebenefits #hr #sbc #aca #dol #everydayhrpodcast

I didn’t realize how much insurance was impacting my treatments until I started my driver rehab practice. When I worked in the system, 𝘐 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘱𝘶𝘵 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘐 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥. Like most therapists, I understood productivity and billing requirements were part of life. I didn’t always have time to be as creative or intentional with treatments as I liked. 𝗢𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗜 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗵-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝗺𝘆 𝗲𝘆𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 “𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝗧.” I stopped thinking about coding, billing, defensible documentation, or if we did an activity for 7 vs 8 minutes. I simply did what was best for each individual client and provided flexible, client-centered OT services. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗺𝘆 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘁𝘀: 🍌 Swing into the store to buy bananas because they’re tired of bruised ones from the grocery delivery service. 🎣 Drive to their favorite fishing hole and walk on the uneven terrain to the dock for the first time since receiving their prosthetic leg. 🍫 Get a surprise gift for his wife, who has been providing 24/7 care and support since his stroke. (We drove 15 miles out of the way to get her favorite chocolates, just in time for Valentine’s Day.) During these treatments, we’re still addressing their core goal, which is returning to independent driving. But we’re also addressing their mental and emotional wellness by allowing them to decide where we go during driving sessions. 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝘀𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗪𝗔𝗡𝗧 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘣𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘸𝘰 𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘵 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘢 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘐𝘈𝘋𝘓. In the 2016 comedy Office Christmas Party saying things got a little out of hand is an understatement. Although fantasy, some of the risks are very real. When hosting a corporate event, you really don't have full control over your guests. And when one decides to over indulge on whiskey sours then drive home, the liability door to the host is open. Special Event Insurance is designed to cover specific areas of risk for those hosting corporate parties: ➡ Bodily injury or wrongful death to third parties that resulted from the event ➡ Property damage to a venue being utilized for the event or personal property of employees/guests ➡ Liquor liability (make sure it is included) should an intoxicated guest cause bodily injury to another party or damage another’s property ➡ Cancellation fees from a venue, caterers, or entertainers should the event be called off for circumstances out of your control such as bad weather When planning an event, consider the implications.
