The immersive cinema format, 4DX, has achieved unprecedented success with its recent releases, Twisters and Deadpool & Wolverine, marking its two best weekends on record. This surge in popularity may inspire filmmakers to incorporate 4DX into their creative vision from the outset.
The format's mainstream breakthrough came with Twisters, which generated $2.1 million in its domestic opening weekend, accounting for 15% of the total gross. This momentum continued with Deadpool & Wolverine, with 4DX contributing $2.5 million to its opening weekend box office, representing 6% of the total.
Theater owners are capitalizing on this trend, expanding 4DX screenings to meet demand and preparing for upcoming releases like Alien: Romulus, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and Gladiator 2. Despite its international presence, with 727 screens worldwide, 4DX has significant room for growth in the US, where it currently operates only 64 screens. The format's parent company, CJ Group, plans to expand its US presence substantially.
Industry stakeholders hope that 4DX will follow in the footsteps of IMAX, establishing a lasting presence in the market, rather than experiencing fleeting popularity like 3D.
