Last week at ADIPEC Exhibition and Conference I had the opportunity to talk to some of the most forward-thinking start-ups in the energy space, and one common theme emerged - innovation and collaboration are key to accelerating the energy transition. 🚀
We are constantly on the lookout for transformative technologies that will help us to deliver affordable energy solutions, at the right scale, at the right time. This year, I had the privilege of meeting with several of the innovative start-ups Shell Ventures has invested in, including:
• Daphne Technology - who is revolutionising LNG by reducing methane slippage, making it a cleaner fuel for our customers.
• Detect Technologies – who is using AI to enhance safety and operations with over 20 deployed assets that proactively protect people and infrastructure.
• Akselos – who offer structural integrity solutions to extend the life of key assets like Deepwater, FPSOs, and GTL facilities.
• Verdagy – who is pioneering cost-effective green hydrogen production via membrane-based electrolysis, driving large-scale decarbonisation.
• GLX Digital Limited – who develop innovative software solutions and digital platforms that is reshaping the LNG market
By working closely with start-ups like these, we go beyond just investment; Shell Ventures works closely with portfolio companies to deploy their capabilities across Shell's global operations and with our customers, developing innovative low-carbon solutions and accelerating both commercial success and energy transition impact.
What are your thoughts on the future of energy, and how do you think innovation and emerging technologies can support the energy transition?

Key take aways:
Opportunities and Challenges in the Global and Nordic Hydrogen Markets Hydrogen is already a massive market, expected to contribute to 20% of global CO2 reductions by 2050. Projects are scaling up from 10 MW to several hundred MW, focusing on large-scale solutions. We serve large-scale consumers where the competitor is fossil fuels, not renewable alternatives.
Why is HydrogenPro a Good Investment?
❇️ Technology Focus:
We deliver the technology customers need, significantly reducing electricity costs for green hydrogen production with our third-generation electrode technology.
❇️ Lean Organization:
Capable of delivering large projects efficiently, thanks to our core technology and strong partners.
❇️ Cost-Effective Supply Chain:
Crucial for creating value for shareholders, with significantly lower costs than many competitors.
❇️ Strong Partnerships:
Collaborations with major players like Andritz in Europe and Mitsubishi Power in the USA, providing turnkey solutions.
❇️ Proven Track Record: Delivering to 2 of the 10 largest projects in the world, showcasing our robust and effective technology.
💠 The Cost of Green Hydrogen
In many Western countries, renewable energy is still more expensive than fossil fuels and requires support. However, in countries like India, renewable energy is already cheaper. The market for hydrogen is developing similarly to solar energy, which has become the cheapest form of energy to produce.
💠 Challenges with the European Hydrogen Bank and Chinese Content
We offer competitive solutions globally, meeting European Hydrogen Bank requirements with minor adjustments and reducing dependence on China. Most projects are self-financed by project owners.
💠 Impact of Trump taking office in the USA
Hydrogen hubs are largely governed by Republican states, with tax subsidies being a key component of federal support programs. We see good progress in several planned projects in the USA.
One of our electrolyzers requires 5 MW and produces 1,050 Nm³/hour based on 4.8 kWh/Nm³. Our next generation will achieve < 4.4 kWh/Nm³, representing a further 10% improvement.
We document our achievements at full scale, which some of our competitors haven´t demonstrated.
Join us in driving the future of decarbonization! 🌟
📢 The latest report from Hydrogen Europe on producing decarbonized hydrogen is now available, and it brings two pieces of good news for Sakowin Green energy!
First, Sakowin is explicitly mentioned among the 13 mature methane splitting technologies. With the goal of launching our first industrial demonstrator at the end of 2024, we are thrilled to be highlighted in this significant European report.
Second, this report acknowledges a claim we have long advocated at Sakowin. The European Union, in its recent decisions, has not adequately considered pre-combustion carbon capture methods. Today, this results in a preference for carbon capture and geological storage solutions over those like Sakowin, which store carbon in a solid form. In other words, there is a regulatory disparity favoring technologies that address the problem (CO2) after it is created, to the detriment of solutions that prevent the problem (with solid carbon).
To learn more, I recommend reading this report! (Link in the comment)
