With rising housing costs and limited availability, many seniors face challenges finding a home that fits their needs and budget. Projects like these not only provide a roof over their heads but also foster a sense of belonging and community. Accessible senior housing ensures dignity and security for those who have contributed so much to our society. Making life affordable for Vaughan residents – both now and in the future – is a priority for the City of Vaughan. That includes taking steps to get shovels in the ground to build new, attainable homes to support our growing population. As part of this commitment, Mayor Steven Del Duca and Members of Council approved reductions to the City’s development charges, which have been among the highest in the Greater Toronto Area. This step, which comes following a Member’s Resolution from Mayor Del Duca to find solutions to this housing crisis, positions the City to address affordability challenges and to make life easier, particularly for young families. The National Fair Housing Alliance released our policy roadmap for the 119th Congress and incoming Trump administration to address the nation’s fair and affordable housing crisis, ensure fair and equitable housing opportunities for all, and promote a stronger economy. Our four main priorities over the next two years are: 1. Preserve checks and balances; 2. Protect established rights and freedoms; 3. Promote fair and affordable housing for all households and communities; and 4. Support robust civil rights protections for automated systems, including artificial intelligence (AI). Health and wealth are strongly tied to our ability to access safe and affordable housing and homeownership. Unfortunately intentional exclusion built into our society means having a healthy and affordable place to live is not a universal experience. Today, on Fair Housing Day, we commemorate the 56th anniversary of the passage of the Fair Housing Act, the landmark civil rights law signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson on April 11, 1968, that made discrimination in housing transactions unlawful. Fair housing is more crucial than ever, especially as Missouri faces restrictions on housing vouchers, directly contradicting fair housing principles. We must remain vigilant, prioritizing the needs of tenants and families to ensure equitable housing and homeownership opportunities for all. Let's continue to unite in our efforts, striving for a future where everyone can access safe and healthy housing.
