September 11 had a major impact in the world, and this impact is also reflected in the news coverage in the following years. With this study, we wanted to investigate to what extent 9/11 had an impact on the creation of one global public sphere in the Western world. On the contrary, we found that the classic news value of geo- graphical proximity is still dominant: The news coverage increases most clearly the moment an event occurs on a local level. The extreme example of this was the murder of van Gogh, which was widely covered in the Dutch newspapers while relatively neglected on a global level. The other key events discussed also show strong and significant local focus. Whereas 9/11 was mainly seen as an American event by both local and international press, an interesting difference is seen looking at Madrid and London. While Madrid was localized almost to the same extent in the newspapers, the London bombings were far more localized in the U.S. press, even more so than in the British press. The portrayal of Muslims also reveals an interesting pattern. Although no significant shifts in negativity were found after 9/11 or after the local key events, 9/11 did create a strong framework of Muslims as terrorists in all investigated media. After the cr…

Deutsche Welle TV channel has a wonderful high-quality Documentaries series on the main Political, Scientific and Cultural issues of current times. The one I share here today is one such piece. Insightful journalism work from the audiovisual German media company. I recommend friends to pay close attention to what is disclosed - up to what is possible... - about the Chinese industrial complex and how some Western European countries - Germany included - have become excessively dependent on it for the supply of industrial goods... Even simple Antibiotics pills to treat a child's pneumonia. Plus there are other interesting insights about the complex interdependence of some industrial supply chains critical for competitiveness, industrial and commercial edge. The European main economic agents should indeed change their strategy regarding China. It is not clever to believe in the 'good will' of the natural virtue of Liberal Markets Economic policies when the other side of the trade does not abide by the rules. Do these values be 'blackmailed' in the name of some 'commercial edge'. Even for Liberals, perhaps No... China’s New World Order - How dependent is the West? | DW Documentary https://lnkd.in/dfm2ppNJ

John Garnaut, a former Australian journalist, argued that the leaders of the Chinese Communist Party look to Stalin as their model, and have built the party to mimic the totalitarian Party built by Stalin. President Xi once spoke at the Beijing Forum on Literature and Art, “Art and literature is the engineering that moulds the human soul; art and literary workers are the engineers of the human soul.” It is dangerously naive, he claimed, to view the Chinese regime as a “normal” authoritarian regime… Find the full article in the comments

Masterclass in using facts to counter emotion
This interview between Douglas Murray and South African News Show Anchor Jane Dutton provides an excellent insight into why so few media organisations give balance to the issues around the conflict between Israel and Hamas. They can't, because to do so would expose the glaring holes and misinformation in the media narrative. In this interview, Dutton repeatedly makes false claims which Murray corrects - revealing that this is not about differences of opinion, but cold hard facts. Claiming, as Dutton does (for example) that Gaza has been 'occupied' isn't an opinion - it's a lie (Hamas had total control of Gaza between 2005 and 2023) - yet the claim of occupation is rarely challenged because so few media organisations allow those with knowledge of the issues to correct the record. Here in New Zealand there are several organisations and people who have attempted to provide balanced commentary on the matters in dispute - but they are routinely ignored by NZ media in favour of an extremely biased narrative and repeated misinformation. At best, what you're hearing through media is only one side of the story - and in most cases you're simply being lied to. If you believe in common decency and fair play, make the effort to find out the stuff you're not being told. My easy-to-read article at www.voicesforisrael.co.nz addresses this and many other false media claims. If you're confused about what's going on, I strongly encourage you to read it.....

Great talk by Ed Yong. I really wish more journalists followed his stated rule here: for every story he wrote, he forced himself to follow a rule--half the people he talked to as sources had to be people he never talked to before. This was done as a way to diversify ideas around COVID topics he was writing about. What timing--I was pondering/lamenting recently how certain people dominating the spotlight in the media really is frustrating and problematic in educating the public. There are limits to any expert's perspectives and thus more breadth is needed to get at the depth of many public health issues. The practice of multiple journalists converging on the same source over and over does a disservice to the fact that some of the biggest pressing public health (and thus societal) challenges we have in the US and globe need a broad range of ideas and inputs and there is a BIG pool of very smart, concerned experts out there with something to contribute. Going to the same handful of sources ends up being lazy journalism and, as Yong notes, also a big risk.
Ed Yong is one of the great science and health reporters. He's even a greater human being, whose empathy for people and the natural world is his super-power. "I have achieved every professional accolade that I could have ever dreamed of and more, and it completely broke me." Science journalist Ed Yong earned global acclaim and a Pulitzer for his critical reporting on the pandemic for The Atlantic, but it came at a deeply personal cost. https://lnkd.in/ebNuWvrz

It was a pleasure this past week to hear from Mark Sappenfield, editor of The Christian Science Monitor, during a gathering of funders and healing practitioners that I had the honor of facilitating in a network we have helped to weave over the past 8 years. If you follow me at all in this space, you know how highly I think of The Monitor. It sets the bar very high for trust-worthy journalism and worthwhile reading by: (1) acknowledging that things are generally more complex than others might be inclined to admit or allow for, (2) being explicit about why they publish the stories that they do, (3) highlighting a set of core #values in all of their writing. Mark proved to be the kind of deep, reflective, humble and good-humored human being I would expect in his position. He spoke to the realities of change and transition that are occurring all around us with great calm and perspective, and continued to emphasize the theme of #trust that is showing up in recent editions of The Monitor. I am providing a link to that series on trust for you to dip into and highly recommend it, if your are at all open to a different and refreshing take on the news, that may challenge some of your assumptions. And I wanted to share this quote by Mark that showed up recently and to me exemplifies so much is what The Monitor is all about - “One of my favorite words as a journalist is ‘nuance.’ If a story isn’t nuanced, it’s probably not true. Yet that’s not the trend in journalism today. The outrage machine wants to cast things in black and white. “The article today from Whitney Eulich and Alfredo Sosa adds nuance to the portrait of Mexico and immigration. Things are more complicated than we often acknowledge. But they’re also more interesting. And understanding the real story helps you move past shallow partisan talking points and be a more effective part of the solution.” Indeed. Read on below. And keep it up, Mark! https://lnkd.in/eKit8VUA

A Turkish journalist made a very insightful point yesterday He said that while the US elite / deep state never cared about the suffering of people it caused, in different countries. But in earlier years, it was careful to create a false impression of being a caring society , for the long term implications. So as not to create an obstacle for further exploitation, in the long term. For the last 3-4 years, however, the US deep state does not care any longer. It is bare-faced about suffering and destruction it causes . The elite / deep state is no longer bothered about creating a false impression of being caring and benign : Why ? He interpreted this to mean, that the elite in the US know something that we do not know. And in their eyes, the current years are not the last decades of US as a declining superpower, but the last few years . Grab what you can, before the deluge. Insightful. And disturbing too. _______________________________________________ The transfer of #1 power in the world, is normally accompanied by conflict, devastation and turmoil. Looks like we are closer to the war and turmoil period, that I thought

Last week, the new Asserson report was released about the BBC, addressing its bias in media coverage related to Israel, a topic that has troubled British media for decades: https://lnkd.in/gwkukTW9. Shortly after, my colleague Dr. Dave Rich from the British Community Security Trust (CST) published an article on Israel’s “always-critics,” denouncing biased attitudes in Western public debate: https://lnkd.in/g-uBk54b. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆? 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗮𝗯-𝗜𝘀𝗿𝗮𝗲𝗹𝗶 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁? Can we truly speak of a more comprehensive understanding of both sides, or do we see the same tendency toward oversimplification, lacking nuance, and most crucially, balance? To gain clarity on this, I briefly examined the work of a prominent and distinguished journalist, Martin Klingst. Klingst has long worked as a U.S. correspondent and political journalist at DIE ZEIT, a widely respected liberal publication in Germany, which is especially well-known among academics. Since October 7th, Klingst has written several pieces on Israel and the Middle East conflict. Just a few days ago, the journalist published an article addressing the “pager attacks” in Lebanon. In this article, I observed parallels to some of the critiques raised by Rich.
