Deutsche Welle TV channel has a wonderful high-quality Documentaries series on the main Political, Scientific and Cultural issues of current times. The one I share here today is one such piece. Insightful journalism work from the audiovisual German media company. I recommend friends to pay close attention to what is disclosed - up to what is possible... - about the Chinese industrial complex and how some Western European countries - Germany included - have become excessively dependent on it for the supply of industrial goods... Even simple Antibiotics pills to treat a child's pneumonia. Plus there are other interesting insights about the complex interdependence of some industrial supply chains critical for competitiveness, industrial and commercial edge. The European main economic agents should indeed change their strategy regarding China. It is not clever to believe in the 'good will' of the natural virtue of Liberal Markets Economic policies when the other side of the trade does not abide by the rules. John Garnaut, a former Australian journalist, argued that the leaders of the Chinese Communist Party look to Stalin as their model, and have built the party to mimic the totalitarian Party built by Stalin. Masterclass in using facts to counter emotion

Great talk by Ed Yong. I really wish more journalists followed his stated rule here: for every story he wrote, he forced himself to follow a rule--half the people he talked to as sources had to be people he never talked to before. This was done as a way to diversify ideas around COVID topics he was writing about. What timing--I was pondering/lamenting recently how certain people dominating the spotlight in the media really is frustrating and problematic in educating the public. There are limits to any expert's perspectives and thus more breadth is needed to get at the depth of many public health issues. The practice of multiple journalists converging on the same source over and over does a disservice to the fact that some of the biggest pressing public health (and thus societal) challenges we have in the US and globe need a broad range of ideas and inputs and there is a BIG pool of very smart, concerned experts out there with something to contribute. Going to the same handful of sources ends up being lazy journalism and, as Yong notes, also a big risk.

It was a pleasure this past week to hear from Mark Sappenfield, editor of The Christian Science Monitor, during a gathering of funders and healing practitioners that I had the honor of facilitating in a network we have helped to weave over the past 8 years. If you follow me at all in this space, you know how highly I think of The Monitor. It sets the bar very high for trust-worthy journalism and worthwhile reading by: (1) acknowledging that things are generally more complex than others might be inclined to admit or allow for, (2) being explicit about why they publish the stories that they do, (3) highlighting a set of core #values in all of their writing. Mark proved to be the kind of deep, reflective, humble and good-humored human being I would expect in his position. He spoke to the realities of change and transition that are occurring all around us with great calm and perspective, and continued to emphasize the theme of #trust that is showing up in recent editions of The Monitor. I am providing a link to that series on trust for you to dip into and highly recommend it, if your are at all open to a different and refreshing take on the news, that may challenge some of your assumptions. And I wanted to share this quote by Mark that showed up recently and to me exemplifies so much is what The Monitor is all about - “One of my favorite words as a journalist is ‘nuance.’ If a story isn’t nuanced, it’s probably not true. Yet that’s not the trend in journalism today. The outrage machine wants to cast things in black and white. “The article today from Whitney Eulich and Alfredo Sosa adds nuance to the portrait of Mexico and immigration. Things are more complicated than we often acknowledge. But they’re also more interesting. A Turkish journalist made a very insightful point yesterday He said that while the US elite / deep state never cared about the suffering of people it caused, in different countries. But in earlier years, it was careful to create a false impression of being a caring society , for the long term implications. So as not to create an obstacle for further exploitation, in the long term. For the last 3-4 years, however, the US deep state does not care any longer. It is bare-faced about suffering and destruction it causes . The elite / deep state is no longer bothered about creating a false impression of being caring and benign : Why ? He interpreted this to mean, that the elite in the US know something that we do not know. And in their eyes, the current years are not the last decades of US as a declining superpower, but the last few years . Grab what you can, before the deluge. Insightful. Klingst has long worked as a U.S. correspondent and political journalist at DIE ZEIT, a widely respected liberal publication in Germany, which is especially well-known among academics. Since October 7th, Klingst has written several pieces on Israel and the Middle East conflict. Just a few days ago, the journalist published an article addressing the “pager attacks” in Lebanon. In this article, I observed parallels to some of the critiques raised by Rich.
