Just a thought. An important one. One which I question. A hospitality colleague of mine asked me a question today after being told they lost an opportunity to someone that had years ahead of them. Why are the corporate folks afraid of hiring "first time" anything? "Why do corporate folks celebrate a facade of growing people when they constantly after each posting, post for executive property level positions, such as GM, AGM, DOO, they hire people who have had those jobs for 5-10-15 years?" "Have the area and regional managers become complacent, overwhelmed, overworked that they pretend there are no future generations that they can bet on?" "Why can not I not become the next best thing for this organization given my track record and commitment?" So the question I begin to ask, when is it time? When is it time to grow the next generation? When is it the next time to grow the next general manager? When is is the next time to bet on the next guy? I simply answered, "I do not know". I saw a job posting for a Senior Director of the F&B Program, with 56 expectations under the role descriptions and responsibilities falling under five main categories: Leadership ✔️ Talent/Culture Growth✔️ Customer/Guest Experiences✔️ Brand Strategy ✔️ Development✔️ I have experience in 54 or 96% of the expected responsibilities, specifically in a senior or executive role. Then, I traveled down to the ‘Candidate Requirements.’ A whopping 34. Out of these, I met 31 or 91%. I read once that men apply for a job when they meet only 60% of the qualifications, but women apply only if they meet 100% of them. This currently is burning in my mind right now. 🔥 Why am I doubting my ability to apply for a job because I am less than 10% off from potentially being a perfect candidate? Hell, if I were getting 90% or higher in school, my parents would have been doing Irish jigs up and down the Beltway. Ladies, apply for the job. Opportunity

While the job of the hotel General Manager is to get superstars in each of the departmental management positions, the reality is that this (almost) never happens. Thus, the GM has to coach and shore up whichever area is weak. My rule of thumb is that if the GM knows your job better than you do, then your job is at risk. You had better get deeper into your job ASAP. It may be the case that the GM could do your job better, that is ok, but you are supposed to be doing it 100% of the time and he can only spend 10% or less on it. So make sure that through your owncompetence, your boss don't have to do your job. This generalization is true all the way up and down the organization. Each functional manager reporting to the GM must try to simultaneously represent the view of their function yet work as part of the management team to optimize the whole. It is an inherent conflict that some manage better than others. GMs become particularly worried about direct reports who become too “tribal,” that are too focused on their team to the exclusion of the division, because they worry that they are not working for the whole company and they also worry whether or not the employee is promotable. If someone does not show respect for their peer groups today, it is difficult for that person to lead them tomorrow because leadership requires trust. Those that do their functional jobs best can clearly articulate the impact of any potential decision on their team and then on the whole division so that all of their peers and the GM can understand, and then they take their functional hats off and recommend what is best for the division and company. Not easy.
