#sundayreading As I noted before, no significant scientific problem in the 21st century can be discussed without relation to the Fermi Paradox, paraphrasing Dobzhansky's statement about Darwinian evolution and biology. While it may be difficult to find civilizations of our size, there should be ways to look for more advanced civilizations. One potential technosignature is the Dyson sphere, a concept introduced by physicist Freeman Dyson in 1960. A Dyson sphere is a hypothetical megastructure that an advanced civilization could build to surround their star, harnessing a significant portion of its energy output. This hallmark of a Type II civilization on the Kardashev Scale—a measure of a civilization's technological advancement based on their energy consumption—represents a level far beyond our current Type I status, where we primarily utilize energy from our planet. Given the plethora of images from telescopes available in the public domain, now is an excellent time to employ AI and machine learning tools to search for such technosignatures. In a recent study, researchers embarked on a comprehensive search for partial Dyson spheres by analyzing optical and infrared observations from Gaia, 2MASS, and WISE (here's the link https://lnkd.in/eUxndtuY). The authors developed a sophisticated pipeline that applies multiple filters to sift through a sample of five million objects, identifying potential Dyson sphere candidates and rejecting false positives. This pipeline incorporates a convolutional neural network to help identify confusion in WISE data. After a thorough analysis, the pipeline identified seven candidates that warrant further examination. Interestingly, all of these objects are M-dwarfs, for which conventional astrophysical phenomena do not easily account for the observed infrared excess emission. While none of this serves as definitive proof of a Dyson sphere, it is a promising first step towards potentially exciting discoveries. The ability to filter through vast datasets using AI/ML tools opens up new possibilities in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. I am sure we will see a lot of science like this. The result is a grotesque fusion of flesh and metal, a hive mind with a terrifying agenda. Ultron-Hal: A rogue AI program, "Ultron," merges with the dormant AI core of HAL 9000 from a forgotten space station. 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗿 was a Scottish mathematician and theologian known for inventing logarithms and for his fear of the 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗹. Before falling asleep, he ordered a servant to ring a bell to scare away evil spirits. In the "Plaine Discovery of the Whole Revelation of Saint John," he argued that the Pope of Rome is the 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁, a man of sin, a son of perdition. Later on, with the "Mirifici Logarithmorum Canonis Descriptio," he invented a mathematical device that transformed complex multiplication and division into addition and subtraction chores. 𝗟𝗼𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗺𝘀. Astronomers and navigators, who relied heavily on complex calculations to determine the positions of celestial bodies and navigate great distances, were baffled. Pierre Laplace, years later, would notably say that 𝗡𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗿 doubled the life of all the astronomers. The picture below represents the ideal relationship between the predicted logarithms and the real logarithms. In a perfect world, every predicted logarithm would be exactly equal to the actual logarithm. This discrepancy happens because, in 𝗠𝗟 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀 like neural networks, we train approximate patterns based on data. But models don't necessarily converge to exact mathematical values, especially for deterministic relationships like logarithms. Since this relationship is mathematical and deterministic, a neural network is likely overkill.
