Did you know? Australia and New Zealand have some of the highest rates of asbestos-related diseases in the world? Asbestos can still be found in many homes, public spaces, and commercial buildings, making awareness and proper management essential. During Asbestos Awareness Week (November 18–24 2024), we are reminding everyone of the serious health risks posed by asbestos exposure. Employers and businesses, as Persons Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU), have a legal duty under workplace health and safety laws to protect anyone entering their premises from hazardous materials, including asbestos. For commercial buildings built before 31 December 2003, having an up-to-date asbestos register and management plan is a legal requirement. These documents are vital for maintaining basic compliance and ensuring a safe environment for everyone on site. Richard Wilkinson, Principal WHS Consultant and Certified Occupational Hygienist (COH)®, shares practical advice on how to manage asbestos risks. His video, Asbestos Management Services, offers useful tips and strategies for businesses.
