🚨 Asbestos Awareness Week 2024 🚨 Asbestos exposure is New Zealand’s #1 workplace killer, tragically claiming around 220 lives every year. Despite 80+ years of awareness, too many workers are still at risk from this silent killer. The 2022 Asbestos Sector Review revealed some alarming findings: Asbestos awareness in the wider construction sector remains “generally low”. The review recommended improving training and protections for tradies and DIYers to reduce current exposures. These efforts aim to lower disease rates over the next 20, 30, or even 40 years. 📣 Asbestos safety risk from high pressure water hoses in focus for Asbestos Awareness Week. The dangers of using high pressure water hoses on asbestos cement roofs, fences and walls will be a focus of Queensland’s Asbestos Awareness Week (25 November to 1 December 2024). In Queensland, it is illegal to use high-pressure water hoses on asbestos cement roofs, fences, and walls – there are substantial fines and clean-up costs for those found to have breached the Workplace Health and Safety Act 2011 (WHS Act). National Asbestos Awareness Week Despite a complete asbestos ban more than 20 years ago, an estimated one in three homes across Australia still contain asbestos. These asbestos-containing materials are now between 30 to 100 years old and are deteriorating, including the matrix to which the asbestos was bonded. The older they become, the more likely they are to release harmful asbestos fibres. In the ACT persons with management or control of a workplace must ensure that all asbestos or asbestos containing material at the workplace is identified by a licensed asbestos assessor. Take some time during National Asbestos Awareness Week to update yourself on the WHS duties related to asbestos in the workplace. Everyone is aware of the risks of asbestos but silica is still too often overlooked. The HSE estimates around 4000 deaths are annually due to COPD resulting from past workplace exposure to silica. Lung cancer and silicosis cases are in addition to that.
