In the late 1800s, wild turkeys were nearly wiped out due to hunting. By 1919, state leaders responded by implementing conservation efforts, which included setting bag limits and hiring game wardens. Today, approximately 586,000 wild turkeys roam the state, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
