Tomra's technology, operational in numerous countries, helps achieve effective recycling and fosters a circular economy by improving the sortability of consumer goods packaging. 📦 Biotrend SA and Freepoint Eco-Systems have announced a strategic partnership to enhance the recycling of waste plastics in Turkey, the Balkans, and Central Asia. Their collaboration focuses on developing advanced recycling facilities that convert waste plastics into pyrolysis oil, a key ingredient for new plastic production. This partnership aims to recycle 250,000 tons of waste plastic annually, significantly reducing plastic pollution. Biotrend will also sell 10% of its shares to Freepoint, using the proceeds to fund new recycling projects. 🚮 Our portfolio company ELICIT PLANT and Bayer announced a collaboration to enhance agricultural productivity. 🚀 MONIN'S PET BOTTLES EVOLUTION From 1th of October 2023, our PET bottles contain 50% recycled PET (RPET)! Thanks to everyone's recycling efforts, we are able to obtain this material from the recycling of drinks bottles. As part of this circular economy, we save 135 tonnes a year of virgin petrol-based plastic, which is as good as 275 tonnes of carbon. Rashi Agrawal, Director of Business Operations, Sales, Banyan Nation - one of our key speakers at the PRSI Roundtable had many valuable insights to share with the panel. She emphasized having solutions that are indigenous to India, and decentralized in nature so that it’s more viable at the grassroots level. While speaking to the panel, she also stressed incentivizing the scrap traders community and how we can learn from the ‘White Revolution’ of India. Banyan Nation is one of India’s first vertically integrated plastic recycling companies that helps global brands use more recycled plastic instead of virgin plastic. Their proprietary plastic cleaning technology converts collected post-consumer and post-industrial plastic waste into high-quality recycled granules, comparable to virgin plastics. This was a well moderated discussion with varying view points shared. Some notable points where 1) We need more incentive for collection systems and behaviour change towards segregation and not so much recycling. 2) Technology for recycling is the easier part, getting clean segregated feedstock for recycling is a big challenge. 3) Recycled materials should not have to compete on pricing with virgin polymer. 4) Indore model has been difficult to replicate but has to be. 5) Governance frameworks need to improve a lot 6) Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) has a lot to improve still. Beyond Plastic extends PHA into bottle capsUS-based Beyond Plastic is using polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biopolymers to develop what it claims is the world’s first completely biodegradable plastics bottle cap. The PHA is supplied by CJ Biomaterials, a division of South Korean firm CJ CheilJedang, and renders the cap recyclable and compostable, in addition to being biodegradable. Derived from nature, CJ Biomaterials’ biopolymers serve as building blocks to improve functional characteristics of traditional plastics. PHAs work well as modifiers to other polymers or biopolymers and serve to increase bio-based content, accelerate biodegradation, and improve the functional properties of resins and finished products.
