I am grateful for CCIVS, FYEG, and the Racial Justice Taskforce and all the organisations involved for this amazing opportunity to be able to be a speaker at Decolonise IVS networking event. The event was about decolonisation, volunteering, 'development' work and youth exchange programs. CCIVS has spent nearly three years on this research project, with the goal of being more aware of how organisations are affected by colonisation and finding a way to change that. One of the many take aways and reminders; • Understanding that the current system creates a power imbalance even if we think there isn't one or that we are doing 'good'. • Different cultures have their own system that may not be 'volunteering' as we know it in west but are there to uplift communities when there is a need. • Lastly, and this is my contribution, for the decolonisation process to truly begin we need to understand the systems we are in, and then be able dismantle and to uproot them. #activism #decolonisation #change #research #conversation #volunteering
