Earlier this week, Singapore and Malaysia exchanged an Agreement on the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).   The JS-SEZ Agreement aims to strengthen the value proposition to compete for global investments by improving cross-border goods connectivity between Singapore and Johor, enabling the freer movement of people and strengthening the business ecosystem within the region. Singapore-based companies can benefit from this enhanced connectivity for goods and people by expanding their business overseas and twinning business operations, tapping on the complementary strengths that Singapore and Johor offer.   Both countries also exchanged Memorandas of Understanding (MOUs) on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Carbon Credits to support the decarbonisation of our economies, drive sustainable growth, and bring sustainable development benefits.    Read the full Factsheets for more info: https://lnkd.in/gKDbRFaG

Meeting with Head of Economic Affairs, Embassy of Indonesia The RCCI leadership, including President Usman Shaukat, Senior Vice President Khalid Farooq Qazi, Vice President Fahad Barlas, and executive committee members, warmly welcomed Madam Ingan Malem, Head of Economic Affairs, Embassy of Indonesia, at RCCI. It was a pleasure to host a visiting delegation from the Pacific Alliance Inter-Parliamentary Monitoring Commission (CISAP) to lunch, as part of their week-long visit to Singapore. The delegation was met by representatives of Ministry of Trade and Industry (Singapore), Enterprise Singapore, Singapore Cooperation Enterprise (SCE), Pacific International Lines (PTE) Ltd (PIL), PSA Singapore, Olam Food Ingredients (ofi), Meinhardt Group and Nium. We had a fruitful discussion on strengthening the partnerships between Singapore and the Pacific Alliance countries, through the Pacific Alliance-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (PASFTA) and other modalities such as business missions. We look forward to the PASFTA’s entry into force in the near future, which will support greater trade, investment and collaboration opportunities for our businesses. Many Singapore companies such as PIL, PSA, and Olam Food Ingredients are already active in the Pacific Alliance markets, showcasing the commercial potential of these dynamic markets. The much anticipated Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) agreement was exchanged on 7 Jan at the 11th Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat! Was invited to a studio interview on CNA Singapore Tonight with Jill Neubronner. https://lnkd.in/gPpP9HBy Quizzed on how excited businesses are about JS-SEZ and how Singapore businesses can grow with JS-SEZ, I said the potential of Johor-Singapore as one economic area has always been there but so are the underlying issues and challenges.  Some of the early initiatives - setting up the Invest Malaysia Facilitation Centre, streamlining of custom procedures for land intermodal transshipments and collaboration on vocational training holds promise in easing the flow of goods, doing business in Johore and providing the necessary technical manpower to support the new investments. I said that businesses are cautiously optimistic that this will herald a new era of economic integration between Johor and Singapore built on complementarity, collaboration, and commitment of both countries.   As an indication of business enthusiasm, the number of companies participating in our upcoming JS-SEZ Business Mission on 19-20 Feb has jumped to over 60 companies following the announcement! Was also asked whether we risk MNCs bypassing Singapore and set up business direct in the SEZ. I said MNCs are already overlooking Singapore and setting up in other destinations! With the JS-SEZ, the competition is not between Johore and Singapore, but with other destinations that are eyeing a piece of investments arising from global supply diversification. The beauty of JS-SEZ as an integrated economic region is that businesses that are more land and resource intensive can now set up in Johore while benefiting from the connectivity that Singapore offers in the movement of goods and people out to the world, our deeper financial market ecosystem and control tower functions. We can be greater together operating as two economies but one ecosystem!
