Curious about how to prepare students to thrive in the era of AI? The #IGEHub project led by Misha Chertkov at University of Arizona integrates data science and AI into its Applied Mathematics PhD program. Collaborating with national and industrial labs, it equips a new cohort of researchers to tackle pressing global issues. The initiative includes modernizing the AM curriculum to meet national security needs and forming triads (student, university advisor, lab researcher) to offer PhD students broader career paths, especially in non-academic sectors. It aims to attract diverse talent and create a workforce ready for the AI-driven landscape, establishing a replicable model for other universities. Academics need a holistic approach to deal with AI in science In many physical and natural sciences journals, it is now commonplace to see articles that illustrate the uptake of artificial intelligence in science. Consider, for example, a recent article published in Nature about the marvels of an AI tool in predicting biomolecular interactions. AI is now used in a variety of ways in different fields of science, from making discoveries in astronomy and modelling and predicting medicinal drugs to conservation of wildlife. The dizzying pace of developments of AI use in science is raising questions about how science education in universities is incorporating these recent developments. Some important questions are emerging for science education in universities: Is science changing because of AI use? How can science teaching and learning in universities reflect the recent developments in science? Such questions may seem to only concern future research scientists but in fact, when science is considered in all its might, education of a whole set of professionals is at stake because science is a complex endeavour that concerns much more than research outputs like scientific knowledge and research processes like scientific methods. I am thrilled to announce that I have successfully defended my Ph.D. thesis in Computer Science titled "Entangling Artificial Intelligence with Extended Reality Paradigms for Human Activity Support"🎓✨ at the University of Bologna (Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna). During my research period, I had the opportunity to explore and implement innovative ways to enhance human activities through the integration of AI and XR technologies (Extended Artificial Intelligence) in different fields, like Cultural Heritage, Creative, and Manufacturing industries! This journey has been incredibly rewarding, filled with rigorous research, countless hours of work, and invaluable learning experiences. I am immensely grateful for the support and guidance from my advisor Gustavo Marfia, but also my colleagues, friends, and family. 💥 Last Friday I defended my PhD thesis and couldn't be more thrilled! Using #GenAI, we tackled the challenges of data scarcity and privacy in #healthcare. We increased the utility of synthetic data from generative models to be more effective when used in downstream applications (e.g., employed to train AI models).
