This day is of serious importance as three-quarters of the world’s major conflicts have a cultural dimension. That is a really big slice of the pie being culture-related. This has led to efforts by the #UnitedNations and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to curb this in a bid to achieve one of its major objectives — bringing #peace into the World." #WorldDayforCulturalDiversityforDialogueandDevelopment #DiversityDay

Happy International Day of Peace! It is a special day, and we are delighted to join the world in its commemoration. This year’s International Day of Peace theme is “Cultivating a Culture of Peace”. It is such an important theme as it reminds us that peace is everyone’s responsibility! When it comes to peace, everyone has a role to play, whether it is to do something to promote peace and development or refrain from doing something that may cause mayhem in the community. Thus, we use this opportunity to encourage you to cultivate a culture of peace consciously.  Culture is a way of life. Essentially, and speaking to the theme of this year, we encourage you to be a peace practitioner by embracing dialogue, equality, diversity, inclusion, justice, respect for self and others around you, etc., as a way of life. A little act of intentionality to be a pacesetter for peaceful coexistence could be the beginning of a lifelong habit. #internationaldayofpeace#positivepeace#development

The question of cultural appropriation comes up a lot in my work and I have developed my answer over the years. Understanding the the difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation is a vital process when developing cultural competence and Anti-Discriminatory Practices. Appropriation is theft. It exploits and takes, with no regard or consideration. It claims the culture as its own creation. It disrespects the originators and maintains their exclusion. Also known as colonialism. Appreciation, shines a light and champions the originators, with admiration and respect. It includes proper remuneration and is linked to activism for improved equitable rights, access, recognition and reparations. Also known as collaboration.
