🌍 Join us for our next webinar as we explore the accelerating globalization of sport 🌍 The race to reach new audiences may be nothing new, but the last decade has seen a step-change in the way sport, and its constituent stakeholders, have approached global expansion. International games now punctuate the sports calendar with more being added every year, a tactic symbolizing the wider trend of teams, leagues and partners attempting to embed their brand and product into new overseas territories. So, what’s driving this investment, how can you do it successfully, and what of the potential pushback from fans back home? These are just some of the many questions we’ll seek to answer in this webinar, with the help of industry heavyweights Stacy McWilliams - Los Angeles Lakers, Yusuf Jackson - South African Rugby Union (SA Rugby), Kelhem Salter - Major League Baseball (MLB), and Simon Freedman - Booking.com. As someone deeply passionate about sports management and marketing, I've set an ambitious goal to elevate soccer's popularity in the United States to match that of football, basketball, baseball, and hockey. The ongoing Copa America, however, underscores the need for thorough preparation ahead of the 2026 World Cup, posing a challenge to this objective. What started as an interview aimed at entertainment content with fans evolved into a profound discussion on tournament logistics. One pressing issue debated was the prospect of using turf instead of grass. Will this enhance soccer's appeal? I remain skeptical. My hope is that FIFA preserves the integrity of the game by ensuring optimal playing conditions for WC 2026. Let's ensure that every decision we make aligns with our goal of fostering soccer's growth and securing its place among America's favorite sports. #SportManagement #CopaAmerica #SportsMarketing

Red Bull, the globally renowned energy drink company, has expanded its sports portfolio by acquiring Omiya Ardija, a professional football team based in Japan. This acquisition marks Red Bull's inaugural foray into Japanese professional football, highlighting a strategic move aimed at bolstering its presence in Asia. Red Bull has a well-established history of investing in sports teams to elevate brand visibility and engagement. The company owns several football clubs around the world, including RB Leipzig in Germany, Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, and New York Red Bulls in the United States. These teams have played a crucial role in promoting the Red Bull brand through notable performances in their respective leagues and international competitions. Omiya Ardija, located in Saitama City, competes in the J3 League, the third tier of Japanese professional football. Red Bull's acquisition involves taking over from Nippon Telegraph and Telephone East, marking the first instance of a foreign company assuming sole ownership of a Japanese professional league team. This move aligns with Red Bull's strategy of investing in clubs with potential for growth and development, both on and off the pitch. Red Bull is contemplating options to reflect its new ownership in the team's name, such as RB Omiya Ardija or Omiya RB Ardija. However, any potential name change would require approval from the J. League board of directors, as Japanese regulations currently restrict clubs from adopting company names for rebranding purposes. Nevertheless, Red Bull has pledged to respect the team’s established name and club colours, which have been integral to the club’s identity over its 26-year history. Red Bull's entry into Japanese football could have significant ramifications for the sport in the country. With Red Bull's financial resources and expertise in sports management, Omiya Ardija may experience enhancements in infrastructure, talent acquisition, and overall team performance. The new ownership is likely to boost ticket sales and sponsorship opportunities for the club, as well as generate increased attention for the J. League. Furthermore, the club will benefit from amplified exposure through Red Bull’s extensive social media channels. Red Bull's acquisition of Omiya Ardija represents a bold foray into the Japanese football market, reflecting the company's dedication to expanding its global sports influence. As Red Bull leverages its resources and expertise, the impact on Omiya Ardija and Japanese football could be substantial, potentially setting new benchmarks for the sport in the region. https://lnkd.in/epKJDUe7 #JLeague #footballfinance #footballbusiness #RedBull

Great to see Major League Soccer attendance increase YOY for a second-straight season, and the league's players are the X factor for further growth. What would further accelerate attendance gains would be more work by players to build their brand by leveraging the various elements of popular culture and amplifying content on these initiatives via social media. Together, this will have the dual impact of creating a larger community/marketplace around the athlete and cultivating greater interface value (connection between the brand and consumers). Strong interface value is proven to generate ongoing consumer "demand" for the product (e.g. Jordan Brand, syndication of any popular sitcom) - which in this scenario would be manifested through increased game attendance. In this respect, MLS has significant potential for further attendance growth as its players, beyond the biggest names, build their brand to the point they're increasingly becoming part of the mainstream cultural conversation. A little application of sport marketing theory to an interesting news story.

Houston’s NRG Stadium Set to Host 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup Final for the First Time For the first time ever, Houston's NRG Stadium will host the Concacaf Gold Cup Final, marking a huge milestone for Texas soccer fans. Scheduled for July 6, 2025, this will be the final match of an international tournament featuring 16 national teams from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, just one year before Houston welcomes the world again for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Why This is Big News The announcement highlights Houston’s reputation as a top destination for major soccer events. This will be the eighth time NRG Stadium hosts Gold Cup matches, more than any other venue, and the seventh time for Shell Energy Stadium. NRG Stadium has been chosen as one of five Gold Cup venues that will also serve as host locations for the 2026 World Cup, underscoring its central role in the future of international soccer. What’s in Store for Houston? Houston Texans President Greg Grissom expressed his excitement about hosting the 2025 final, noting the city’s "rich history" of hosting major soccer events. The collaboration between NRG Park, Houston First, and the Harris County Houston Sports Authority promises to bring an unforgettable experience for fans in “H-Town” next summer. In preparation for the World Cup, NRG Stadium will undergo minor upgrades, including widening the field starting in summer 2025 and installing a new grass field in May 2026. A Boost to Houston’s Sports Economy Houston’s role as a soccer hotspot isn’t just about fandom; it’s also a major economic driver. The 2023 Gold Cup matches in Houston drew an average attendance of 35,341, exceeding the tournament’s overall average, and generated an estimated $18.6 million in economic impact. This trend of high turnout for international matches positions Houston as a premier market for soccer events. What’s Next? The 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup officially kicks off on June 14, with the quarterfinals set for June 28 and 29 and the semifinals on July 2. The official tournament draw will take place on April 10, 2025, setting the stage for an exciting summer of soccer in Houston. The Takeaway Houston is stepping onto the world stage as a premier host city for major soccer events. With the 2025 Gold Cup Final and the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, NRG Stadium is solidifying its position as a global sports venue. This is more than just a game; it's a testament to Houston’s commitment to the growth of soccer in North America. Get ready, Houston. Soccer history is about to be made in your backyard.

🏈⚾️🏀🏒 October!!! All sports in full swing… For those who are looking to expand their sports intake; here is my summary, with a not so subtle reco: The King = National Football League (NFL) Americas Past Time = Major League Baseball (MLB) “Today” = National Basketball Association (NBA) & WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) Sleeper hit = National Hockey League (NHL) ⚽️ But soccer is where it’s at baby! Why? For me, it’s simple. All other sports leagues are 2 dimensional: Regular Season & Playoffs. You could always go the Fantasy League or Sports Talk routes for more, but that's just doubling down on their 2 dimensions. If that satisfies you—then read no further. If you’re hungry to go deep into a Sport; continue down the soccer rabbit hole… 1) Where other Sports can offer their “World" –it is not simply a “World” of soccer—it is a damn “SOCCER MULTIVERSE.” First; it's Global. You can pick a league or leagues to follow: 🇺🇸 Major League Soccer, United Soccer League (USL), National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), 🇲🇽 Mexico's Liga MX, 🏴 The Premier League, 🇩🇪 Bundesliga International GmbH, 🇮🇹 Italy's Serie A, 🇪🇸 Spanish La Liga, 🇫🇷 French Ligue 1 — I could go on but basically pick a country on the planet and you’ll find a Pro Soccer League. The best part in 2024; you can find most all these sports leagues streamed or broadcast in the States. 2) It doesn’t stop there. If you are a fan of a top international club in Europe, chances are you can then also follow them through UEFA Champions League; a separate competition on top of domestic league play. If your club is among the planet’s best, there is also the every-4-year competition of the FIFA Club World Cup; a tournament of the top Pro Clubs from around the world (Coming to the USA in 2025). 3) Where the Pro Leagues stop, the International opportunities continue. The most well known of these international competitions is the (every-4-year) FIFA World Cup 2026™ - Canada, Mexico and the United States. If you want to watch the up-and-coming younger generations of the international game; then you get the Summer Olympics every 4 years as well. In addition to these competitions, international soccer also offers additional tournaments such as the UEFA Euros and The Nations League. 4) If you like to pick a top player to follow, expect their career will have them moving from one nation’s Pro League to another as their career progresses. And chances are they will represent their National team, so you will get to follow those journeys as well. 5) EA SPORTS = EAFC (If you're a gamer, play it.) 6) Lastly there is the fandom culture. The chants. The songs. The flares. The Tifo (stadium sized posters & signs). The passion. 🤩 With soccer, there truly is NO off-season! If you enjoyed this rabbit hole and plan the give soccer a chance, or you are among the converted faithful already, give this post a like. Thx 🙏🏼
