❓ What does it look like for a video editor to be a great MENTOR? In the years before remote work was so common, it was typical fare for editors to help guide assistant editors on their path to becoming an editor. I remember many amazing editors I worked with as an AE who gave me excellent tips on anything ranging from Avid settings to music editing. I was given tasks to do, followed by advice on how I could have done that task even better. It was a great learning opportunity to grow my skills and make the leap to jr. editor and finally, editor. Unfortunately, with remote work the norm, AE's have significantly less chances to work with editors and gain valuable advice, input, tips and tricks. As an editor working remotely, I make sure to go out of my way to: ▶ Periodically reach out to my AE's and offer my time if they have questions. ⏳ ▶ Let them know the ways in which they are being super helpful to my workflow. 👍👍 ▶ Offer productive criticism on anything that hurts an editor's workflow, but always explaining why so they can start to "think like an editor." ⚡ ▶ Provide links to public industry rate surveys. 🙌 Rate Transparency 🙌 It's hard to reach out to co-workers you've literally never met. I encourage editors to reach out to their AE team to offer any advice to help advance their careers. I want to be a team player and help AE's where I can, just like I was helped when I was in that position. Check out my work and reel at www.kyraboff.com and let's see how I can help be a team player on your next project. I'm looking forward to it!

Dear hiring officers and companies, Comms professionals are not jack-of-all-trades. We are specialized experts in writing, designing, filmmaking, editing, and more. Bundling multiple roles into one job description leads to burnout, dilutes our impact, and undermines our expertise. It's time to recognize our value and respect our specialization. Let's create a more sustainable and efficient work environment by appreciating the power of specialization in comms. #RespectCommsPros #SpecializationMatters #Sustainability #Efficiency #Communications #JobDescriptionsMatter #Media

🚩Remember: A Creative Director is hired to DIRECT the creative. The title is the job description. If you’re being thrown “idunnos”w/ no compass that’s called a vague director. And the only traction you’ll get is spinning wheels.

Why is it so challenging to hire a world-class Creative Director who is exceptional at building unforgettable brands? It’s not just about skill, it's about demand. Everyone wants to hire a creative human from the best design spaces in the world. But not everyone can. When the biggest brand studios, creative agencies and in-house brands want you. The real question is - where will best future-proof your career as a design leader? Where can you create exceptional work with innovative and prestigious brands that don’t play safe? Where do you want to build your legacy? Sometimes the answer is the simplest one. The power of design studios is only getting stronger. Particularly studios that have always stayed true to what they do best: building exceptional brands. I’ve partnered with studio that lives and breathes this philosophy. A studio celebrated as one of the best in the world because they set the bar, and always keep pushing it. If this resonates with you, let's talk.

If you’re hiring an in-house videographer at your college, and the salary range is $40k-$50k, we need to talk. This is not an entry level position. If you want someone to just take orders and push buttons like a glorified intern, then maybe. But if you want someone who knows what they’re doing, and can take ownership of the role and lead creatively with intention and a strong marketing mindset, you need to pay them appropriately. I personally wouldn’t feel right paying anyone less than $70k for those expectations. Add to that the benefits package and other costs of managing an employee, and you’re likely exceeding 6 figures. When it makes sense to, invest in in-house talent. They’re super valuable. But there are instances where hiring an external video partner is the more cost-effective option, provided you’re not taking a “random acts of one-off videos” approach. If you find yourself on the fence between in-house and external talent, reach out to me. I can show you what a year’s worth of video content could look like as an external partner, or I can refer you to some talented folks who want to work in-house. Both are good options. Just don’t assume that hiring staff is the cheapest route.

Six months ago, I said that when it comes to job searching, "it's not what you know, it's who you know". I then put out a call for people who were hiring in our industry or related industries to let me know what open roles they had with an offer to connect them to very qualified candidates. Through that process, I was able to get a few people connected with new opportunities. Now that we're poised for a busy back half of the year and beyond, it's time to do it again. Our industry has exceptional, highly qualified people who are actively searching for their next opportunity! These candidates know how to: -Acquire and distribute films and other content into cinemas -Create compelling cinema programming that audiences want to see -Create film, brand and F&B marketing campaigns that drive conversion -Foster relationships with cinema exhibitors, film studios and vendors -Operate cinemas -Project management, data analytics and forecasting/modeling As I said in my previous post, I've been the fortunate beneficiary of people's willingness to help me make connections in the past and I feel a deep sense of responsibility to do the same for others. Message me with your needs and I might be able to connect you to just the person you need to find!
