The SBIRT model (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) is effective for addressing hazardous substance use and substance use disorders (SUD), but its application for transgender and gender diverse (TGD) populations requires further research. Providers should not assume that methods effective for cisgender individuals will work for TGD folks due to their unique needs and experiences as well as the effects of minority stress. Adapting SBIRT to work for TGD populations involves maximizing benefits and minimizing harm through culturally humble and gender-affirming practices. Despite limited research, practice guidance is drawn from existing clinical and empirical literature focused on affirmative care for TGD patients and clients. This includes considerations for screening processes, brief interventions, and referral processes that acknowledge the specific SUD treatment needs of TGD clients.
Language that respects people can have a positive impact on their decisions to access treatment. Health practitioners can utilize this SBIRT Model Among Transgender & Nonbinary Populations as a tool addressing their specific challenges: https://lnkd.in/gX_BPsQ4 #LGBTQIHealth

LGBT healthcare facts: LGBT elders are twice as likely to live alone and be single, and 3-4 times less likely to have children. LGBT elders suffer significant health disparities, including high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, HIV/AIDS, etc. Social isolation affects many LGBT elders as they deal with stigma and discrimination in their daily lives and in our country's aging system. In a recent survey, only 22% of respondents felt they could be open about their LGBT identities with facility staff. 89% predicted that staff would discriminate based on their sexual orientations and/or gender identities, and 43% reported instances of mistreatment. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ This weekend, we celebrated the LGBT+ Pride March, and I want to take this opportunity to share a project I developed during the Midjourney course on image generation with #AI, focusing on the situation of healthcare providers in Mexico. 📈 Although the data from the National Institute of Public Health on stigma and discrimination related to HIV is from 2006, it was surprising and concerning to me. 🕵🏾♂️ To achieve this, I created a script highlighting the key messages, designed specific images using Midjourney prompts, and assembled everything in Adobe InDesign. 👀 You can see the full document here: #PharmaceuticalMarketing #MedicalWriting #EvidenceBasedMedicine #ScienceAndHealth #ScientificCommunication #MedicalLiaison #PublicHealth #HealthInnovation #Midjourney #AI #PrideLGBT #MedicalResearch
