Hiring graduate engineers should be the simplest part of my job. But it can be far more complex than hiring for experienced senior engineers. Senior Engineers come with project experience, a career path, promotion curves, employment paths, company cultures, ways of working and more specific preferences, motivations and career paths. Graduate Engineers come with some theoretical experience and limited knowledge of working within a commercial environment and the different ways companies typically work and what their role will involve and the way they will be enabled to within an organisation. So when it comes to qualifying the right graduates for the right environment a lot of it comes down to firstly eliminating paths they specifically dont want to go down before getting a much deeper understanding of their ways of working, personal motivations, hobbies, interests, learning styles, personality and approach. It relies on using every aspect of my "gut instinct" to work out what sort of company environment will get the best out of them and develop them in the right way. The thing I also find interesting about hiring for graduates is that very few make proactive approaches to find out more about jobs. My last graduate hire in Aberdeen was the only candidate out of 200 applicants that directly messaged me for information and highlighted his interest, match and suitability for the role. Graduate hiring should be simple. But it's far more interesting than it sounds on paper. Which is why i'm sitting on a Sunday Morning, drinking an espresso in the sun, putting in the groundwork for the 3 grad hires i'm recruiting for in Aberdeen over the next couple of weeks... Advice to engineering students today, and it may not be popular advice. 1. Don't do your masters in engineering (unless it's specific to something you truly want to do). Most of the recruiters I talk to are not looking for candidates with a Masters degree. Most roles don't require it, most comp structures are not set up for someone with a Masters and most hiring managers are not interested in it. I know that's hard to hear. 2. Get Field Experience. I know this is tough, going out to the rural places, sometimes the middle of nowhere. But this will do wonders to kick start your career. One of the most common requirements I hear from hiring leaders is "field experience brings them to the top of the pile". There are still lots of other factors that leaders consider so the first one won't cancel you out from a role and the second doesn't guarantee you the role, but it's definitely a couple of the most common things I've seen as of late!

One thing that engineering training will stick with you, is looking for solutions, analysing the challenges and identifying steps to tackle them. You are trained to analyse and solve, whether technically, financially or strategically anywhere you find yourself in. #engineering

I agree with this view Nkululeko Thusini. The first thing engineers are taught at varsity (probably in Introduction to Engineering Design 1A at UJ 😋) is: what is an engineer? First and foremost, an engineer is a problem solver. One of the first engineering principles that engineers are taught at varsity is the Design Process, which starts off with identifying the problem and then investigating possible solutions. This involves critical thinking, which is the running theme in all core engineering modules. In every analysis question, every design question from first to fourth year, critical thinking ability is sharpened and enhanced. Hence, all the hilarious "how many engineers does it take to change a light bulb" jokes. Basically, if you ask an engineer, they'll find a solution. If the problem is not in their field of expertise, learning about that field is the first problem they'll solve 😅. Therefore, an engineer can solve almost any identified problem. Even in fields outside of their expertise, because they are trained problem solvers and critical thinkers. Indeed, their entire existence is built on it. I have had the pleasure of gleaning great insights from friends who have ventured into other fields as diverse as banking and data science who are creating great value for their employers and customers.

Recent studies have shown that engineers are significantly more likely to find their degrees directly relevant to their jobs compared to graduates from other disciplines. This is clearly demonstrated by the fact that almost three-quarters (72.5%) of graduates were in paid employment within 15 months of completing their degree, significantly higher than the average for all degrees.
