Earlier this month, the Academy made a joint submission with the ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology to the Opportunities in the Circular Economy inquiry. Learn more https://lnkd.in/gKik7eEC There are scientific opportunities in the circular economy that will drive Australia’s circular economy and sustainable industry transition. Synthetic biology—the application of engineering principles to biology—can be used to redesign biological systems for environmental problem-solving. The submission identifies the following opportunities to scale up the adoption of circular economy principles: Establish a national framework to standardise ‘waste’ definitions and incentivise waste as a resource. Deepen collaboration between government, academia and industry to define research missions and drive circular and bioeconomy growth. Invest in advanced recycling infrastructure and localised waste management systems to enhance waste recovery and create skilled local jobs. This video, featuring Prof Veena Sahajwalla FAA FTSE, explains the straightforward yet highly effective process of a circular economy.

🔄Can the future economy be circular ?🔄 I am happy to share that another paper from my PhD research was recently published in the journal Circular Economy 🍃 Thanks to Patricia Güereca, Ricardo Bello-Mendoza and Rolando Chamy for their efforts and collaboration. 🔃 We assessed environmental impacts of wastewater treatment plants in Santiago, Chile, comparing scenarios of increasing resource recovery to enable a circular economy, with Life Cycle Assessment 🔁 with statistical significance of results included, a novelty for LCA studies 🍃 The main discussion points that arose: - how can we improve methodological consensus for interpreting LCA results ? -how can we incorporate wastewater emerging and biological contaminants in LCA inventory databases ? Lets talk LCA 🗣️

New Article Published! 📢 We are excited to share a recently published research in the Journal of Circular Economy titled: "How Do LCA Studies Support CE? A Systematic Case Study Review" by Juliano B de Araujo, Dr. Michael Dieterle, Luis Schell, Tayla Herrmann, Marina Haug and Tobias Viere. 🌱 This study explores how Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)—a key methodology in industrial ecology—supports the transition towards a circular economy. Through the analysis of 282 LCA case studies, the research identifies gaps in incorporating circular economy principles and emphasizes the need for a more robust integration of cicularity into LCA methodologies to enhance product sustainability across industries. ♻️🔍 Read the full article to learn about the role of LCA in the context of circular economy, and why a stronger alignment is crucial for driving ecological sustainability: https://lnkd.in/dv7k5nFG Thanks to the handling editor of this article: Marvin Henry #JournalOfCircularEconomy #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #LCA #Research #EnvironmentalImpact #JournalPublication
