I love this. Been in sales for more than 20 years and still learn new things continuously. I see companies putting people with product experience into sales roles with no sales training or long term mentorship and then wonder why they struggle.
We weren’t good at anything on the first attempt. It takes repetition and built in confidence through failures and successes both. One of the better summarized sales posts I’ve seen in a while. There’s no magic formula in sales. There’s an outline, but people are still people, situations are all different, and awareness of human needs and the desire for genuine interaction are keys to unlocking one’s potential.
My mentor and coach. Back in the days of Samsung in 1992. Malcolm Drake Brother UK Ltd , now retired. He put me on Richard Denny’s sales course. I was an engineer at Panasonic at the time and I’d never done sales. But I was passionate, I knew what customers cared about and in the end with the right mentorship I turned out to be reasonably good (underplaying as usual). I remember vividly causing major problems for competitors and to think they laughed at my desire to learn the skill of sales.
