Researchers have found that around a third of charities expect their finances to deteriorate in the coming months while a further third expect their resources to stagnate. Pro Bono Economics and Nottingham Trent University’s VCSE Data and Insights National Observatory report warns that deep-rooted challenges of financial instability, skills gaps and rising demand are affecting charities’ ability to support people most in need. It says that most charities expect demand for their services to increase over the autumn, while many face recruitment difficulties and have asked staff to work increased hours.

"I strongly encourage my fellow finance professional to explore Trustee and Treasurer opportunities with NGOs. The experience is not only deeply rewarding but also allows us to apply our skills in ways that can create lasting, positive change in the world." We were delighted to facilitate the appointment of Teresa Au as Treasurer at Trauma Treatment International (TTI) earlier in the year. Here, she shares her initial insights on this crucial role supporting their work to heal the trauma of people affected by torture, trafficking and slavery, persecution and war... "In recent years, I have witnessed the profound effects of trauma on individuals, especially during times of global crises. This has fuelled my passion for making a positive difference in the world. By dedicating my time to volunteer roles that uplift and empower communities, I hope to contribute meaningfully to society. With extensive experience in financial and operational management, I am particularly drawn to volunteering opportunities that support non-profit organizations and social enterprises globally. Serving as a Trustee at Trauma Treatment International (TTI) aligns perfectly with this mission. "Founded in 2017, TTI's mission is to support individuals affected by torture, trafficking, slavery, persecution, and war to heal from trauma, regardless of where they are in the world. As the organization undergoes a period of rapid growth, it is expanding its reach and impact. To support this expansion, TTI sought trustees, specifically someone to serve as Treasurer, who could help drive growth while ensuring strong financial systems and compliance. Since joining TTI in March 2024, I have collaborated closely with the CEO and finance team to enhance management reporting. Currently, we are working on establishing a Finance Sub-Committee to support the Board of Trustees in its financial oversight responsibilities. "Drawing on decades of experience as a CFO in the commercial sector, I bring valuable skills in revenue diversification, strategic implementation, and fostering cross-cultural collaboration that can help non-profits achieve their goals. "Beyond the fulfilment of giving back to society, my volunteer work has also enriched my personal development. Charities are regulated entities with unique compliance and reporting requirements, which has deepened my financial expertise in this sector. Additionally, my exposure to various fields, including mental health and education, has broadened my understanding of critical societal issues. Participating in events, networking opportunities, and training programs organized by philanthropic organizations has also expanded my perspective and contributed to my personal growth." According to the Find a Co-op tool on its website, the 50-year-old Co-operative Housing Federation of Toronto (CHFT) represents 187 properties in Durham, Toronto and York regions. Filter results by vacancies, however, and the number of properties across the three regions drops to zero. Even waiting lists, it turns out, are off-limits to new applicants; that’s how great the demand is for multi-unit non-profit housing that’s owned and operated by the people living in it.
