This is the picture 2 Timothy 3 paints of the "last days" — times fraught with challenges, where people are "lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive" (2 Timothy 3:2, ESV). What is wisdom anyway? The kind that causes you to stop in your tracks and click 💡 Not advice, coaching, promotion or encouragement. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Wait! Don’t be triggered! Stop scrolling and let me unpack the ancient proverb. Fear = honour, respect, revere, be in awe Lord = the Existing One, Higher Power, Creator Some of these words are my reflections and others are alternate translations of the key words. Another option is to contemplate it by restating the opposite. The starting place of true wisdom is realizing that you are not the centre of the universe and there is something much greater and more awesome outside of you. Whether it is God, your concept of a Higher Power, the universe or the collective wisdom of billions of others, it is infinitely more than you can imagine. If you can establish this new perspective, your journey to wisdom and knowledge has only just started. No religion required. Is it possible a religious view of the proverb has caused you to miss the gold? When stuck, think bigger and act smaller.
