Lest we forget – the humans and the animals who served during times of conflict. This ANZAC Day we pay tribute to the brave men and women who served their countries during times of conflict. We also take a moment to remember the unsung heroes of war: the animals who stood alongside them, offering their loyalty, courage, and companionship. From the trenches of World War I to the battlefields of World War II, animals played vital roles in various capacities, often with little recognition for their contributions. Horses, mules, and donkeys were among the most commonly used animals, serving as cavalry mounts, pulling artillery and supply carts, and transporting soldiers across treacherous terrain. Dogs also played crucial roles, serving as messengers, sentries, companions and even search and rescue workers. Their acute senses and unwavering loyalty saved countless lives and provided comfort to soldiers amidst the chaos of war. Cats were also used to help hunt mice and rats on ships and in the trenches. Pigeons were another invaluable asset, carrying vital messages across enemy lines when communication lines were down. Dolphins were trained to detect underwater mines, protecting ships and naval personnel from unseen dangers. While their contributions were immeasurable, the animals of war often endured great hardships and dangers themselves. On this day of remembrance, let us not forget the sacrifices made by these noble creatures. Their service and sacrifice remind us that heroism knows no species. Section comprised sixteen men and fifty messenger dogs. Left to right: War Dog Nell, a Cross Setter; Trick, a Collie; Buller (sometimes referred to as Bullet), an Airedale. All three dogs were very efficient in message carrying and saw service with the 2nd, 4th and 5th Australian Divisions, also with Divisions of the British 8th Corps (Imperial). Trick was particularly efficient and was well known by all Brigades of abovenamed Divisions. He was specially mentioned by Signal Officer of 2nd Division for good work at Rubimont, near Heilly. Give gratitude to the heroic Newfoundland dogs during World War II and D-Day: During World War II, Newfoundland dogs played an important role in various military and rescue efforts. These large, strong, and intelligent dogs were well-suited for tasks such as: **Messenger Dogs**: Newfoundland dogs were used to carry messages and dispatches between military units, as their size and strength allowed them to navigate rough terrain that was impassable for humans. **Water Rescue**: Newfoundland dogs' natural swimming abilities made them valuable assets in water rescue operations. They assisted in saving downed pilots and crew members from the ocean, as well as helping with search and rescue missions. **Trench Warming**: Newfoundland dogs were sometimes placed in the trenches with soldiers to provide warmth and companionship during the cold, damp conditions of trench warfare. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, Newfoundland dogs played a small but important role in the Allied invasion of Normandy. Newfoundland dogs were used to aid in the rescue of Allied troops from the English Channel after their landing craft were sunk or damaged by enemy fire. The thick, water-resistant coats and powerful swimming abilities of the Newfoundland breed made them well-suited for this perilous task.
