Happy Friday! I am inspired by the Y Combinator CEO's efforts to ensure that startups are part of the AI discussion in DC. As the lead Senate staffer on the Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act and a collaborator with startups, I recognize the crucial role of AI startups in shaping the future of innovation and competition. Last week, Tan addressed the Economic Club of Washington, D.C., underscoring the importance of small tech firms in the AI landscape. Tan's visit to D.C. reflects his commitment to ensuring that "Little Tech" has a seat at the policy table. He emphasized that startups drive innovation and need representation in Washington. Tan's lobbying efforts aim to prevent federal regulations from stifling small AI firms, potentially favoring established players. According to Politico,70 percent of the companies Tan’s firm supports are built on AI, including the new models powering tools like ChatGPT. Tan is also focused on promoting a laissez-faire AI ecosystem and pushing back on fears that the technology poses existential threats to humanity.  Tan met with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senators Elizabeth Warren and J.D. Vance. He urged a balanced approach to AI regulation that fosters innovation while considering ethical implications. The collapse of Silicon Valley Bank in 2023 was a wake-up call for many tech firms, including Tan, about the importance of political engagement. He is now rallying his startup allies to influence AI policy, promoting a laissez-faire ecosystem that supports high-skilled immigration and opposes restrictive regulations. In my opinion, having AI startups represented in D.C. ensures that diverse voices contribute to policymaking, driving more significant innovation and competition in the U.S. As Tan stated, “This is a nascent moment that sets the game board.” The collective efforts of startups can significantly shape the future of AI and tech policy. Garry Tan’s initiative exemplifies the need for all stakeholders, especially small tech firms, to engage with policymakers. This collaborative approach will ensure a dynamic, competitive, and innovative tech industry in the U.S.

friend.com costs $1.8M Friend , an AI companion company announced today, spent $1.8 million out of a total of $2.5 million it raised to start the company on its domain name, friend.com, according to its founder Avi Schiffmann. Internet folks are going crazy on him to spend so much on a domain. Here are some reasons why it might not be a bad purchase: 1️⃣ In the subsequent rounds, the domain will tend to increase the valuation so a win-win for investor. 2️⃣ People everywhere talk about your domain (on the initial launch days, visit your website - something every startup wants). 3️⃣ the domain, even if they pivot years later down the line - is a good asset. Also, incase you're wondering these don't translate into real-world investor sentiments. Quick poll: 🤔 Can founders self-assess their startup's tech readiness? This question emerged during the enlightening workshop on AI and no-code solutions by Pierre-Yves at our incubator SIBB - Digital Association of Berlin-Brandenburg last week. As we build our own AI-powered funding platform GrantGPT.EU (SIBB Incubator '25), the question of user autonomy is particularly relevant. I believe many in the #LegalTech space will relate: Should we trust the users to self-assess their case or does it require an expert's evaluation? To make it even harder, how do we capture complex technical information for this assessment in a user-friendly onboarding flow?
