I had the honor of moderating the opening panel at IstanbulTechWeek 2024 last Friday. The panel, titled "AI and Leadership," featured insightful discussions on the applications and future of AI across various sectors. A big thank you to our esteemed panelists, Güliz Öztürk, Çağlayan Yıldırım, and Veysi Küçük for sharing their valuable insights. In my closing remarks, I highlighted the immense potential of Gen AI which is expected to create value roughly equivalent to the economy of the United Kingdom or Germany annually, with significant impacts in customer operations, marketing, sales, software engineering, and R&D. I also underlined the importance of leadership in maximizing the benefits of Gen AI by reducing costs, increasing efficiency, and creating new revenue streams. If there is one person who has influenced my thinking of the 'big picture' when it comes to data and strategy, that would be Vin Vashishta. He also happens to be one of the nicest people I know. And as the old saying goes, "If the mountain won't come to Muhammad then Muhammad must come to the mountain." I haven't been able to attend any of the US data events in my five years in the field. So, to finally meet Vin IRL, I only had to build a data event in Helsinki, Finland, and fly him over. As bonkers as that sounds, it's not that far from the truth. I fully admit that having Vin over is partially a selfish thing. But since he has never been to Finland before, my motivation for us bringing him over is a not-so-selfish one. There's a lot of talk (and even actions) about data and especially AI, even here in Finland. But a lot of it tends to be very technical and tools-specific. And there's so much we can learn from the more strategically-minded thinkers like Vin (who also has the technical chops underneath). Anyway, this is a call to action, especially for my Finnish friends (or friends in Finland, either way). If you are interested in learning how to think about data and AI more strategically (and less from the hype and/or FOMO point of view), come and listen to Vin speak at Helsinki Data Week (links in the comments). Today I had the pleasure of attending the Aurora live event in Helsinki, and it did not disappoint! Many thanks to Management Events for putting together another great event. I wanted to share some of my key learnings from the day: 1. Many organizations are still in the experimental phase when it comes to adapting AI. 2. There is a "regulation tsunami" happening in the areas of data, sustainability, security, and AI. While compliance is challenging, it's important to approach it with a wider business perspective and include risk management. 3. IT plays a crucial role in achieving sustainability goals, but ultimately, change needs to happen on the business side. 4. In today's hybrid world, leadership needs to change as well. Building trust at all levels is a key capability of a leader. 5. Last but not least, I thoroughly enjoyed networking with old and new friends. Kudos to Ira Hammermann Hammermann for facilitating such a fantastic event. Thank you for all the great presenters sharing your experiences. Overall, a great day of learning and networking. 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐓 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 Last Friday, I had the pleasure of joining a discussion panel at the TSL Conference hosted by ING Risk Hub in Warsaw. The main topic of the event was "Leadership of the Future." I was there to address questions related to GenAI and Innovations. One significant topic we tackled, which I have been intensely contemplating for almost two years, is how AI will reshape IT leadership responsibilities and competencies over the next five years. Given the rapid pace of innovation and change in this field, it's challenging to predict specifics, but one thing is certain: the shift will be vast and highly impactful. Here are some competencies and skills that I believe will be crucial in the coming years: * 𝐔𝐩𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠: Embrace technology and AI to understand the tools and capabilities available in the market and how to apply them in your field. * 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲: With unlimited possibilities, only our creativity can set boundaries. * 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝, 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡-𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: Having a helicopter view across multiple domains and technologies will be essential, as access to them will be widespread with a low entry threshold. IT architects, for example, will be particularly advantaged. * 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 & 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐃𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞: As delivering value and services becomes easier, understanding where to deliver and what users and customers seek will be crucial. * 𝐀𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬/𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: Success will come to those who can quickly and creatively combine existing building blocks to deliver high-quality, tailored products. * Leaders of the future must consider their 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬' 𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 of capabilities, incorporating not only human talents but also AI capabilities, cloud services, robots, and more.
