Carers Federation was proud to attend last week’s Learning and Work Institute event in London - a day dedicated to the experiences of Young Adult Carers in education and employment. The Quality Standard in Carers Support, designed by carers, aims to help organisations identify and provide ongoing support for carers, addressing the fact that Young Adult Carers are: - Three times more likely to be NEET (not in education, employment, or training) compared to other young people. - Four times more likely to drop out of college or university than students without caring responsibilities. - 38% less likely to gain a university degree than non-carers. This disparity is even greater for young people who provide high levels of care; those caring for 35+ hours per week are 86% less likely to gain a degree and 46% less likely to enter employment. With specialisations for secondary schools, employers, and other educational stages, visit our QSCS website to learn how our dedicated support can help your business or school make a difference in carers' lives. https://lnkd.in/ehszcBrn Image credit: FE News https://lnkd.in/e8vCDr7B

A stark read this morning and an area of our work at Carers Trust I’m so passionate about. Young carers on average missed 23 days of school in 2022-23, compared to 14 days missed by young people who are not young carers. A new report by Carers Trust shows the alarming impact of caring on young carers’ education and opportunities. Read the report: https://lnkd.in/eh87Bbmg One key concern is that support for young carers in education is worryingly inconsistent. Read the report and see our reccomendations and policy solutions.

Organizations like Musket Transport can make a real difference in a young person's life.
Thank you Musket Transport for inviting Covenant House Toronto youth to explore careers in trucking and transportation. Their team helped CHT youth learn the process of obtaining their commercial driver’s license, provided youth with a demo in a commercial truck and opportunities to test out their virtual truck driving program. Participants left excited and motivated to explore career opportunities in this area. If your organization is interested in supporting youth at Covenant House Toronto, please contact Job Developer, Anthony Lohan at: alohan@covenanthouse.ca #YouthCareerExploration #CareerOpportunities #TransportationIndustry #YouthDevelopment

How do you respond to feedback? I am so proud that today 17 young carers who have never joined us for a face to face event before, have had the opportunity to attend a Making Memories day with MYTIME Young Carers. This happened because the team responsible for delivering these days, asked and then listened to the feedback from the young carers we work with and their families. 📢 Parents told us that sometimes their children didn't want to attend Making Memories events due to having to travel too far- so today's event is taking place in rural Dorset, which has enabled so many new young carers attend. 📢 We noticed that we often saw lots of the same faces at our events, which is brilliant as it means the young carers we work with want to keep coming back, but what about the other young carers we work with? The Making Memories team offered to support families with completing the paper work needed to attend. As a result 4 new young carers have been able to join us! 📢 The MYTIME Youth Advisory Board suggested that some young carers may feel nervous to attend because they don't know anyone. The Making Memories team have introduced a buddy system, which means that the young carers didn't need to feel nervous about making new friends. All small tweaks, but what a massive impact. Listening to the community you serve is vital to ensure that any barriers to entry are overcome. Well done Anna Garrett and Martina- you are always listening and what an impact. #youngcarers #improvement #fairaccesstoall #listening

The race to the bottom in new #truckdriver training is well and truly underway in Ontario’s #trucking heartland. #Truck #drivingschools are witnessing a steep drop in enrolments and fees as competition to attract a dwindling number of students has grown increasingly fierce. After the federal government announced curbs on international student numbers a couple of months ago, some truck driver training schools in Peel Region – comprising Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon – say enrolment has plummeted 40-60%. International students worried about their status in Canada are shying away from investing in a trucking career. More alarming, many of the scores of schools in the area are reducing fees in a desperate bid to sign up the few aspiring truckers available. Leo Barros reports.
