Today was definitely one of those days where you check your calendar, make a very obvious late attempt to paratroop into a zoom clinical consultation after a meeting runs long, accidentally say something curious, and get asked to comment on it in a larger discussion where we invite more therapists to weigh in. 😎 So, PSA: calling all therapists, especially those who work with first responders and/or veterans, have you ever heard someone from this population request a therapist that "is not going to cry or fall to pieces if I start talking about my trauma?" Patients who actively partner with their medical care team, and leverage the strengths of both patient and physician often experience better health outcomes. This collaborative approach—often referred to as "shared decision-making"—empowers patients to be vulnerable and share their symptoms and ask questions to help them have the best outcomes. Patients who are deeply involved in their care understand their condition and are likely to adapt to healthier behavior as well. Over my lifetime I have learned how to manage the times when I feel no control. Rather than fighting or focusing on the hard things I must accept, I focus on my job as a patient- understanding my medicines, asking questions, being prepared, managing the never ending anxiety of living with a chronic condition. My medical team and I intimately understand a lot not only the medical situation, but the nuances of my condition and life. The mutual respect and teamwork we have built has literally saved my life for 45 years. Turn the anxiety and loss of control into energy that can be used to dig in and do what is necessary physically and mentally to have the very best life possible.
