Do you have a Fundamental Wellbeing First Aider in the workplace? According to the charity Mind '30% of staff said they wouldn't feel able to talk openly with their line manager if feeling stressed.' A Fundamental Wellbeing First Aider is a person trained to support mental health and wellbeing in the workplace. The role involves recognising signs that someone may be struggling with their mental health, knowing how to approach and communicate with them, and guiding them towards the appropriate help or resources. This role is similar to physical first aiders, but it focuses on mental health and wellbeing rather than physical health. I have just finished my two day course to become a Fundamental Wellbeing First Aider and I am left feeling quite emotional. The course provides a comprehensive approach to mental health, including understanding the difference between mental health and mental ill-health whilst promoting a culture of open dialogue and support. Everyone was very open and honest with their own experiences and it was humbling to hear where people have experienced struggles and stigma around their own mental health. At SkillBase First Aid you learn how to use an A.C.T.I.O.N. plan which is a practical framework that gives you the confidence to step in when someone may need help, which is so crucial, especially in workplaces where stigma around mental health can still exist. The statistic shared from Mind highlights a significant issue: many employees don't feel comfortable discussing their mental health with their managers. Having people trained as Wellbeing First Aiders could play a vital role in changing this culture and creating safer, more supportive workplaces. Key takeaways from me - 💫 Be mindful of the language that I use around mental health. 💫 Circumstances do not cause me stress but my thought process around them can and therefor it is important to reframe these thoughts. 💫 Listen to understand not listen to respond. 💫 Be mindful of my own pressure pot, how can I minimise my own stress levels?...
