⚓️ Since its entry into force, the #UnitedNations Convention on the Law of the Sea has established a comprehensive legal framework to regulate human activities at #sea. The #EuropeanUnion and its Member States ratified the Convention. However, the integration between these legal systems is still an ongoing process that requires a clear distinction of competences between Member States and the #EU itself. 🇪🇺 As Marta Cerafogli explains, in this context, recent geopolitical developments highlighted the need to address this ambiguity and analyse the effectiveness of the EU #Maritime Strategy in light of these challenges. ✏️ This paper was edited by Manfred Sintorn and supervised by Riccardo Angelo Grassi. 🔗 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dUX9mm6C

At the same time, it is important to maintain a balanced and nuanced approach that acknowledges the complexities of geopolitical conflicts and the need for impartial, fact-based analysis. While the West may have its own biases and double standards, this does not negate the need to hold all parties accountable for egregious violations of international law and human rights, regardless of their geopolitical influence.

Law and War: The Middle East as a Laboratory for the Future World Order By Jean-Daniel Ruch For over 150 years, the international community has sought to establish rules to govern armed conflict, balancing the horrors of war with the principles of humanity. From the Geneva Conventions to the International Criminal Court, these rules are now being put to the ultimate test in the Middle East. Will this conflict challenge the very foundations of international humanitarian law? Can global justice systems, like the ICC, uphold accountability amidst intense political pressure? Jean-Daniel Ruch explores these pressing questions, tracing the evolution of jus in bello (law in war) and jus ad bellum (the right to war) and assessing how the current crisis impacts the fragile architecture of global governance. Read the full analysis here: https://lnkd.in/d9XBbdcV Let’s discuss: How can international law remain a bulwark against impunity in an increasingly polarized world? #MiddleEast #InternationalLaw #Justice #HumanRights #GlobalGovernance

In my recent studies of International Law, I encountered the debate over the significance of the veto power in the UN Security Council. While many argued for its importance in maintaining global stability and safeguarding the interests of major powers, I found myself unconvinced. In this essay, I explore why the veto system, which was designed to reflect post-WWII power dynamics, is increasingly incompatible with the needs and realities of today’s world. From its undemocratic nature to its obstruction of timely action on global crises, I present that the veto power is a barrier to progress in international relations and needs urgent reform. I invite you to read and reflect on why the veto power might no longer be fit for the modern world and what reforms could create a more inclusive global system. ☕🤝
