WeWork which launched in 2010 and rapidly expanded globally, filed for bankruptcy at the close of 2023, barely avoiding total collapse. This is compounded by several workspace closures in Croydon due to rising rents and a lack of support. In this climate, many businesses, including restaurants and bars are jumping on the coworking bandwagon as a post-pandemic pivot. Coworking is about far more than just a desk and chair. For it to work, it must be affordable and accessible to its audience. Not everyone needs (or wants) a lavish setup, nor does everyone have space in their homes to carve out a dedicated office. Many are working from their beds, sofas, kitchen counters, or even bustling coffee shops - baby in tow. In my latest blog for Matthews Yard Workspace, I dive into why physical and flexible workspaces are making a powerful return, reshaping the future of work culture in a post-pandemic world. From tackling isolation to sparking innovation, the evolving workspace landscape holds exciting promise and a chance to reimagine what these spaces mean and do for us. 🩷
In our latest blog post, we explore why workspaces, both physical and flexible, are making a strong comeback and how they’re reshaping work culture in a post-pandemic world. With only 27% of people in our recent study rating their #productivity as excellent when working from home, the question arises of what type of workspace is most optimal for output. Our latest research of over 200 #workspace occupiers found that empowering workers with greater choice and autonomy over how and where they work can make a major difference in productivity – with #coworking spaces inspiring the best output and performance. If given full choice over where to work, our research shows that ideally people want to spend 31% of their work week in a coworking space, compared to just 23% at home. Commute time and age have the biggest impact on how workers rate their productivity within different work environments. Workers with a #commute time of over an hour to the company office and workers aged over 45 rated their productivity significantly higher in a coworking space compared to other working environments (53% and 42% respectively). Employees aged 45 and above, who often find themselves balancing multiple work and personal commitments, experience a notable increase in productivity when utilising coworking spaces. These spaces empower them to take control over their work schedules and environments, giving them the flexibility to choose where and when they work. The hybrid working choice that most workers are currently faced with is between working from home or working from the company office. However, our research shows that only 27% of people rate their productivity as excellent when working from home. By contrast, 45% rate their productivity as excellent when working in a coworking environment, and 44% as excellent in a traditional office setting.

Is coworking a social movement? Harvard Business Review thinks so. HBR interviewed hundreds of people in dozens of coworking spaces, and they found that workers thrive for 3 main reasons: 💡They have the autonomy to choose when and where they want to work, as coworking offices typically have a range of workspaces to choose from. 💡They benefit from the structure of working in an office setting. When combined with autonomy, this type of limited control boosts productivity. 💡Coworking spaces tend to foster collaboration and community among members. It’s much less isolating than working from home. We can't argue with any of that! #coworkingspace #mpowrcowork #downtownrockford
