Last year, the Planning and Environment Committee (PEC) pledged 47,000 new residential units by 2031 within London, but this has raised questions about where these new units will be built. Steve Lehman, Chair of the PEC, has said they'll hopefully be built along transit routes, especially considering the newly underway Wellington Gateway, and the PEC has approved several infill projects, on the basis that "Three to four storeys is not a radical departure in changing the character [of a neighbourhood],” What do you think? Are infill and refit projects the answer the the complexities around continuous new-builds and built-for-purpose properties? #construction #residential #builtenvironment

Miami is undergoing a historic expansion in high rise condo construction with 44 high-rises currently under construction. Adding 15,066 multifamily units, office SF, and other uses to the market. This data only pertains to city boundaries. Construction is when piles are driven into the ground and foundation work begins. Demolition or site clearing is not counted as construction. Under construction high-rises with more than 12 floors in Miami’s city boundaries.

Older commercial buildings should fit into a special class of retrofit. They have all the quirks of the historic craft of multi-wythe brick construction that it shares with the historic residential buildings, except, with a twist. Now you have to bring them up to code for today. Residential part 9 buildings have a looser set of requirements, not so with commercial, and that’s the tricky part. It gets even more complicated when the trades are coming from the residential side of the industry… More on that.
