https://lnkd.in/ekN6Szs3 - Hundreds of different editions of Top Trumps have been produced since the game first appeared in 1978 – with sports cars, motorbikes, tanks and aircraft among early favourites – but never has an official construction Top Trumps been produced. Until now! Created by The Construction Index, the new Top Trumps Construction Edition, features leading construction machinery brands Komatsu, Liebherr Group, Hitachi Construction Machinery, HD Hyundai Construction Equipment, Mecalac and Takeuchi UK. With the UK construction industry facing recruitment difficulties – needing to find more than 50,000 new entrants a year, according to the Construction Skills Network – The Construction Index hopes its Construction Edition range might help to generate interest in the sector among young people. For a limited time, we have also included them free with Monopoly Construction Edition plus a free subscription to The Construction Index magazine. (*UK only, saving worth more than £40)

What do you think of this tilting bridge? Officially inaugurated in 2001, the Gateshead Millennium #Bridge is the world's first and only tilting bridge and allows the connection between the shores of Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead, in the north of England The structure, designed by WilkinsonEyre in collaboration with GIFFORD AND PARTNERS LTD, covers a total of 126 metres along the Tyne River and is reserved exclusively for pedestrians and bicycles. The main peculiarities of this masterpiece of #engineering lie both in form and operation. The bridge consists of two rigidly joined #steel parabolic arches that converge on a transverse cylindrical structure: one arch is intended for pedestrian passage and the cycle path for crossing, the other acts as a support and thins in the central part providing support for the path through 6-metre long steel cables. The entire #structure is characterised by a weight of over 800 tons. #structuralengineering #steelstructure For more: 📌 Follow #ImpressiveEngineering 📌 Click on the 🔔 and select “All”

This is clearly a very emotive decision but it does raise the issue regarding the potential life span for buildings that are designed for a very specific use. The Georgian terrace being the best example in this regard. They have a Simple plan, lots of windows, large rooms and thus can become many things. I don’t think any of those basic principles can be applied to the above. The 60’s office buildings are another great example where the large concrete spans, with a solid structure which is easily extended, also offer architectural flexibility. An extension of the Corbusion vision for a machine for living. It will be very difficult to shoe horn another use into the facade of the building linked to this article. There is a lesson here. Buildings are for people - not just for Architectural beauty or ego. #architecture. #buildingretention.

The beauty of the bare main cables of a suspension bridge before receiving the deck. Forth Road Bridge (1,006m span). Mott, Hay and Anderson, Freeman Fox & Partners, 1964 #inktoberBridges2024 First European suspension bridge with a span of more than 1 km. Before building the deck, the main suspension cables were placed on towers, piles, and retaining blocks. The wires that formed the cables were winding using the bicycle wheel system: two main cables 590 mm diameter, each comprising 11,618 high-tensile galvanized steel wires 4.98 mm diameter. The full potential of the bridge in the image of its suspended cables under construction. #bridges #inktober #civilengineeering #bridgedesign

If you don't know yet I have masters in Earthquake engineering It's a super sub niche in Structural engineering. (Now you know how I can grasp super niche topics and convey it essily.) Although I topped my university in my stream, I haven't officially practiced it as part of my profession. But today... If my professors saw this structure that I built, they'd be proud I hope. 🤣 Ugadi shenanigans with my nephew. 🤭🤌 Typing this away as I leave for training badminton to another cute bunch of 4 year olds. #mythriwrites #storytelling #freelancing

🌱 Spring Semester Kickoff at Transport University: Mastering Pavement Roughness Excited to announce the start of the spring semester for our master's students at Tashkent State Transport University! This term, we delve deep into the intricacies of urban planning and civil engineering, beginning with our first lecture on "Pavement Roughness and Its Characteristics." In this presentation, we explore the critical concept of pavement roughness, its measurement through the International Roughness Index (IRI), and its profound impact on road usability, vehicle wear, and urban infrastructure. We'll uncover how material quality, environmental effects, and usage patterns contribute to pavement conditions and discuss advanced methods and tools for assessing roughness. Our journey doesn't stop here. The lecture sets the stage for further study into innovative measurement technologies, sustainable pavement designs, and their implications on future urban mobility. This comprehensive approach not only equips our students with the knowledge needed to tackle today's urban planning challenges but also encourages them to contribute to sustainable infrastructure development. Stay tuned for more updates and insights as we navigate through the complexities of civil engineering and urban planning. Here's to a semester of learning, innovation, and collaboration! #TransportUniversity #UrbanPlanning #CivilEngineering #PavementRoughness #SpringSemester #SustainableInfrastructure

Legacy Project: Richmond Olympic Oval, 2008. It’s not every day you work on a project the whole world is watching, but that was the case with the Richmond Olympic Oval. Glotman Simpson was challenged to devise a solution that would stabilize the notoriously unstable soil to maintain a perfectly level ice surface for Olympic speed skating events. While nearby buildings were known to settle by as much as 200 mm, the Richmond Olympic Oval could not vary by more than 3 mm over any 3,000 mm span, nor more than 20 mm across its entire length—a distance four times the length of a football field. To meet these stringent standards, we designed a large basement structure on a six-acre concrete foundation raft, which eliminated the need for costly, deep foundations. Custom-fabricated hollow core panels, deeper than typical, formed the ice surface floor, meeting the tight deflection targets with a level of certainty that a typical cast-in-place floor slab could not provide. It’s projects like this that remind us why we’re proud to be engineers. At Glotman Simpson, solving intricate problems is what we’re passionate about—it's what makes our profession challenging and exciting. #GS60 #StructuralEngineering #StructuralDesign #MassTimber #Steel #StructuralEngineers #AdaptiveReuse

Are any construction companies sponsoring student athletes via the new NIL rules? The Construction industry as a whole is generally a good community steward and were used to seeing construction companies sponsor local youth sports. I’m starting to see some professional services firms get into the NIL game. I’m curious if any construction companies sponsor collegiate athletes. Please comment with examples. —— Image AI generated.
