I spent much of my time in the last 12 months collating data on who gets shortlisted and selected in winnable constituencies. Having crunched the numbers, we find again that party members prefer locally resident, male and ethnically white candidates, posing questions as to how parties ensure a diverse slate of candidates whilst giving members a say in selecting candidates. Further, we find that parties do not proportionately shortlist candidates from marginalised groups in winnable seats. In particular, fewer than a third of candidates shortlisted by the Lib Dems or SNP were female, while all parties rarely shortlist candidates in blue-collar occupations. Reflecting on conversations I had at the Conservative Party Conference earlier this month with many contemporaries (who were more successful than I was and who got elected as Conservative MPs in 2010/15/17/19) who are now finding their feet after being defeated in the election in July. Credit to the Conservative Party for putting in place some support for ex-MPs, but this is time limited and with opportunities for a return to public office being somewhat limited over the next few years, many are asking, "what next?" Some of those who won seats in 2010 may not have applied for a job in 20 years and the corporate/HR world has moved on. However, our preparation for those seeking elected office addresses many of the gaps in knowledge and/or experience such candidates might find they have. From researching a company and analysing the skills you have to find the matches with a job specification, to preparing you for competency-based interviews or online tests, the methodology remains the same - find the stories in you that tell the people doing the choosing that you are the right person for the job. A major key to getting your resume to work for you is to avoid vague and general statements like "willing to help, listen, learn". Men lie, Women lie, Numbers don't. Everything you say must be backed up with evidence.
