Book recommendation 3 for 2024. Why do democracies falter or collapse? Long before the current scholarly and popular focus on democracies, the great Nancy Bermeo studied 30 cases of democratic decline. She expected, at the start of the project, to find that democracies fail because ordinary people lose their faith in self-governance. What she found, instead, is that democratic decline is the result of bad leadership -- that democracies fail when leaders adopt highly polarizing positions and pursue their own self-interest and not the common good. This is particularly relevant today, with the USA struggling, in my view, with a general failure of the quality of political leadership. #democracy #leadership #politics #politicalscience #books
