Additional Support Needs in Schools: Getting it right for every child? Since 2007, the percentage of pupils with at least one ASN has increased from 5% to nearly 40%, and the overwhelming majority of those young people (around 95%) spend all of their school day in mainstream classes. In The Herald latest series, Additional Support Needs in Scotland's Schools: Getting it right for every child?, we’ll be exploring the policies, principles and – above all – realities of additional support needs provision in Scottish education via nearly two-dozen articles – still just a snapshot, but the sharpest picture we’ve ever had. Are young people’s additional needs being met with the right support? Is the presumption of inclusion working for families, professionals and pupils? Are we really ‘getting it right for every child’? ✍️ James McEnaney Read more: https://lnkd.in/eM2RBYWg #additionalsupport #heraldimpactseries #education

The Issue of Sameness among CSOs and NGOs in the Public Education Sector: A Sure Shot Way of Destroying the Organization Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) play crucial roles in addressing various social, economic, educational, and environmental challenges. The roles played by CSOs are undeniably significant. These organizations have been pivotal in driving reforms, advocating for policy changes, and implementing grassroots-level interventions aimed at improving educational outcomes. While it is encouraging to see that funding for special schools in some areas is on an upward trajectory, there remains a significant disparity in the provision of resources and support within mainstream schools. Many of these schools are struggling to provide appropriate training and development for staff to effectively support the increasing number of pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. I have had conversations with headteachers and senior leaders from various regions who speak candidly about their difficulties in delivering a high standard of education to SEND pupils. They often highlight a lack of specialist training, insufficient classroom support, and inadequate funding as major obstacles. This situation creates an uneven playing field and places undue pressure on teachers, who are committed to meeting the diverse needs of all their pupils but are constrained by the limited resources at their disposal. #send #adequatefundingforeducation #inclusion

Helen Hayes, MP and Chair of the Education Select Committee, urged those working with children and young people to submit evidence for the committee's new inquiry aimed at addressing England's broken SEND system, which she described as "absolutely falling apart". She stated: "We know that if we make schools a good place to be for children with additional needs, we make schools a good place for every child and we improve the quality of education for everybody. But there is quite a lot of work to do to understand exactly what that means and what that looks like. What is the definition of inclusivity? What are the requirements within the system that will cause schools to be inclusive? And where does the accountability sit for that?" What are your answers to these three questions? Share them in the comments. House of Commons GOV.UK #SocialEmotionalLearning #SEND #SENDReform #Education

Education is a fundamental right that must be protected from attacks. 2024 has seen a rise in deliberate attacks on students and schools globally. The world must unite to protect education and address conflict as a major barrier to learning. We must work together to rebuild education systems in conflict-affected areas, ensuring access to quality education for all children and youth. Holding perpetrators accountable is crucial. Global leaders need to commit to national action plans and local efforts to protect education from attack. Youth must lead advocacy and activism to protect education. Sustainable actions today will safeguard education for future generations. 📌Every year on September 9, the world observes the International Day to Protect Education from Attack. This day is a critical moment to reflect on ensuring safe learning environments for all. Reconciliation SA are excited to announce that Education, action, and change: an anti-racism resource for schools and preschools is now live. The resource will empower teachers and educators to have tricky conversations about the racism that uniquely impacts Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The goal is to ensure that teachers and educators can navigate conversations about racism confidently and sensitively ensuring the safety and awareness of the next generation. Divided into 3 parts, the resource provides a blueprint for teachers and educators to understand and address racism. Part one, education, outlines racism and its impacts. Part two, action, addresses the actions someone can take to combat racism and have necessary conversations. Part three, change, provides suggestions for changes teachers and educators can make to dismantle racism in education. Reconciliation SA are grateful to all contributors and sponsors of this important project, with special thanks to BHP and the Department for Education, South Australia To download your free copy, head to https://hubs.li/Q02rNbjb0
