#SDG4 – which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality #education and promote lifelong opportunities for all – is the United Nations Goal of the Month. Despite some progress, the pace of change remains slow and uneven, with significant disparities across geographies, genders and ages. If no additional measures are taken, only one in six countries will achieve universal access to quality education by 2030. This is certainly true globally but sometimes we forget it right here at home in the United States. Our local, state, and federal government should invest in public education to help reduce poverty. Education is not a cost for government, it is an investment. We should also focus on distributing the investment based on equity. Students living in poverty have more barriers to access educational opportunities. We need adequate, equitable funding of education to overcome poverty and strengthen our democracy. I'll go one step further and say that a large portion of the funding should be targeted to civics education to heal our country's divisions and develop more engaged citizens.
