What does effective leadership look like in movements for change? In Leadership in the End Times, Roger Hallam reflects on lessons from Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil, challenging the ideal of “leaderlessness” in activism. Drawing on insights from journalist Chris Hedges and his own experiences, Hallam critiques the “tyranny of structurelessness” and calls for a new, values-driven approach to power, centred on love, trust, and respect. At stake: the future of democracy, justice, and climate action in the face of rising authoritarianism. “Monocultures narrow the frame.” More brilliance from David French in The New York Times. He writes: 🙋🏻♂️"It’s a fact of human nature that when like-minded people gather, they tend to become more extreme. This concept — called the law of group polarization — applies across ideological and institutional lines. The term was most clearly defined and popularized in a 1999 paper by Cass Sunstein. The law of group polarization, according to Sunstein, “helps to explain extremism, ‘radicalization,’ cultural shifts and the behavior of political parties and religious organizations.” The imperative and importance of variety and diversity also applies to …. 🌽 Farming and nature. Monocrop farming, now the norm in the US, delivers efficiency, but at a cost to soil health, susceptibility to disease and loss of biodiversity. By contrast, regenerative agriculture argues for diversity in crops leading to resilience.. 🏭 Problem solving. A diversity of perspectives is allows for a broader range of solutions. Systems thinkers often encourage getting the system in the room…to hear from different voices. 🧐 Healthy business ecosystems. This is one reason why monopolies need to be broken up. They do not have the right incentives to innovate or to serve customers. 🌎 #Sustainability. According to the World Wildlife Fund US (WWF) Living Planet Report, the average population of vertebrates (mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and fish) has declined by 69% since 1970. The global community is meeting right now in Cali Columbia at COP16 to work to deliver on the commitments of COP15 and arrest the dangerous degradation of natural diversity. Sadly, the almost unanimous support for rules and incentives of dominant neoliberal thinking stands in the way. Uniformity might be comforting and efficient, but, it can prove dangerous and destructive. https://lnkd.in/eYkKhiFH Annie Rowell Maxine Bédat Leslie Johnston, M.Sc. Our environmental problems are not firstly a scientific or legal problem. They are firstly a sacredness problem. Research, technology, investment, regulation: none of it is going to solve the challenges we face if we don't change our attitude, posture and approach to nature at a more cosmic level. Because those ideas are just just tactics. And tactics rely on a worldview. If we don't view it with more awe and wonder; as playing a part in a more cosmic story; or as something that is not just a creature or a canopy but a teacher, a guide, a witness and a reflection of something more majestic, we will always fall short. Hoping for a regenerative economy without midwifing a wide scale sense of re-enchantment is a huge ask. Potentially an impossible one. It is akin to the difference between two societies where one sees children as resources to protect and one where they are viewed as carrying an intrinsic, divine spark that demands cherishing for cherishing's sake. So, to shoehorn in a pop reference here if you like your celebrity wisdom, you can look to the fella named after what sounds like a wilderness retreat - Justin Timberlake - because, after all, he did say (almost): "I'm bringing sacred back. Yeah. Them other boys don't know how to act. Yeah." Well, trying to at least. But here's to hoping. :-) ----- #sacredenterprise #culture #sustainability #environmentalism #purpose #spiritualintelligence #sacred #governance #leadership

𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘆: 𝗔 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲 𝗜 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀. History repeats itself, but not always in the ways we expect. In a world where the term 'Manifest Destiny' conjures images of a bygone era, its principles are eerily weaving through the fabric of modern leadership. The belief in inevitable or rightful expansion and domination, once used to justify territorial conquests, has found a new arena in extremist politics and political leadership. This resurgence isn’t about land. It's about ideas, influence, greed and race. To assert its power, it draws on fear and threatens violence. Education, nonprofit and civic leaders are at a crossroads; we've won some victories and always held out hope for the progressive values and visions that drive us. But our hope has been shaken and some victories have been reversed ... and the fear is we're just at the start of this trend. We're called on to build a political rampart to block this trend and a bridge to reverse it. Our leadership is not about claiming new territories but about nurturing and supporting the stakeholders, constituencies and neighbors with whom we stand. It's about forging paths that invite others to walk with us; not behind, below or without us. Leadership - like electoral victories - happens by addition, not subtraction. We build that bridge by adding relationships ... intentionally, even painstakingly. Our goals are not the self-serving victories of manifest destiny but, rather, civil collaboration to ensure the safety and well-being of ourselves and all our neighbors. 𝘈𝘭𝘭 our neighbors! ! Even those who oppose us politically are deserving of safety and well-being. I know it’s a burden ... a real difficult burden … but just as nearly every major religion – one way or another – instructs us to love our enemies: we simply cannot afford to dedicate ourselves to a definition of inclusiveness that perpetuates any type of boundaries. No "them". No "us". It’s because this is difficult – because no one else will do it – that 𝙬𝙚 have to do it … because, in the end, 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩’𝙨 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙬𝙚 𝙨𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙘𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙮. None of us leading today has the luxury of leading without thinking about our leadership's larger purpose. Talk to me ... please take a moment to join this dialogue. visit: https://lnkd.in/dPTBqBeG podcast: https://lnkd.in/eCp_rK2B

We are stronger together! The four principles I instill in myself and share with others are Cooperation, Abundance, Deep Democracy, and Reciprocity. Suppose we are to move toward a regenerative model and cultural shift. In that case, we need to work together to build effective coalitions and institutions, believe and behave as though there is enough for all of us, empower each other to participate in collective decision-making, and give onto others as they have given onto us. Sustain the people and the planet.

This quote from Ellen MacArthur sums up for me both the concept of sustainability and the challenges we face. 🌍 If we continue using up our planet's resources and sinks, then humanity does not have a future. It is questionable if society can make it to the end of the century with a business as usual model of capitalism and consumerism. The challenge is that to avoid this scenario, our modern society must undergo a philosophical change, a fundamental paradigm shift in mindset. 🌱 It has to accept that both the economy and society are a part of the environment and depends 100% on the condition of its resources and sinks. Screw them up and humanity has no future. 👨👩👧👦 But humans are a highly adaptive creatures. They can change to their circumstances and surroundings, although there is always some resistance. Our economy and society are always in a constant flux of change, so they can be changed. ➡ All we have to do is try to point them in the right direction so that we have a future. What do you think? #polycrisis #doughnuteconomics #degrowth #anthropocene #wellbeingeconomy ✒ I'm a writer, historian, and thinker who likes to question assumptions about society and sustainability. 🌍 Why Indigenous Peoples’ Day Matters More Than Ever 🌍 Have you ever paused to think about whose land you’re standing on? Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a powerful reminder to reflect on that. It’s not just about looking at the past, but about celebrating the resilience, rich cultures, and ongoing contributions of Native peoples today. Indigenous communities have stewarded the land with a deep connection to nature long before borders existed. Their wisdom on environmental sustainability, community-building, and leadership offers lessons we all can learn from. As leaders, it’s important to acknowledge the original stewards of the land we live and work on, and to embrace a mindset of learning and respect. On this day, let’s take time to honor Indigenous cultures and support Indigenous-led efforts. Whether that’s learning about the land you’re on, amplifying Indigenous voices, or supporting Native businesses—your actions today matter. 🙌 How can you show your support for Indigenous communities? 🌱 #IndigenousPeoplesDay #HonorTheLand #IndigenousLeadership #CulturalAwareness #SupportIndigenousVoices #LeadershipMatters #LearningAndReflection #SustainableLeadership #AmplifyVoices

I have been reflecting upon 'Dynamic Stewardship', a term I coined two years ago, in anticipation of the first #Anthropy and how it might be something politicians should embrace, particularly at a time of a general election. In these times it would be a development perhaps, if all politicians chose to look at what they advocate through the concept of 'Dynamic Stewardship.' It (as does Anthropy and being an 'Anthropist') requires a spirit of proactive responsibility towards the future. Leaders should look to not only maintain the unique qualities that define our nation (something itself under threat from various quarters) but also innovate and implement new thinking to enhance these qualities. Fundamental to dynamic stewardship are three overarching principles: Human Kindness, Meaningful Collaboration and Unbound Leadership. Can you imagine rival politicians, who were outwardly kind to each other, sought to collaborate in a meaningful way on solving issues and were inspiring in their advocacy of accepting the need to learn, to connect with others and serve society, rather than simply sell policies to it. I know its pointless, but these principles could lead our nation towards a brighter, more sustainable future - if only more people were prepared to be brave and follow them. The 'Why Wheel' from Clore Social Leadership is a helpful visual tool that demonstrates the link between social justice issues and the environmental and climate crisis. While it doesn't address every issue, it's evident that taking action on climate is a form of social justice action. We're all impacted, regardless of scale, so it's crucial to collaborate and work together towards a brighter future! 🌍✊ #ClimateAction #SocialJustice #Collaboration Source: https://lnkd.in/e_iDfGcZ
