Last month, I was fortunate enough to attend the launch of Prof. David Lindenmayer's newest book, "The Forest Wars", hosted by Nature Conservation Council NSW in Glebe. The book uses decades of peer reviewed science to systematically debunk and dismantle dozens of myths propagated by Australia's unsustainable native logging industry, who for many years have successfully used spin, greenwash, and outright lies to keep this destructive industry alive, instead of embracing the future - a plantation-based industry. The book also gives insight into the bipartisan politics of dodgy deals and corruption that allow this environmental vandalism to continue against the public interest. As I've been reading through the book, one statistic has stood out to me as particularly shocking. In reference to the native forest logging operations in a single catchment in Victoria: "By 2050, ongoing logging there will have reduced water yields by an amount equivalent to that used by 650,000 people. ... This reduction in water yield due to logging could have a greater impact on Melbourne's water supply than climate change." Welcome to the Brownwood Green News, a digital newsletter covering policy, funding, and public meetings concerning local ecology in Brownwood and Brown County, Texas. Motto: “Burned out on national politics? Try local engagement!” This newsletter intends to answer the question “How can ordinary citizens affect local policy and funding related to their local environmental concerns, including pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change?” It is part of a broader movement to rebuild local news, and provide solutions journalism in every community, especially small towns. The primary goal is to alert and connect readers to the many public meetings where they can observe and participate in the policy and funding decisions that affect their local environmental quality. Each edition of the newsletter includes a civic calendar with links to the offices, agencies, and elected bodies holding these meetings. The primary focus is on land use decisions related to Brownwood and Brown County’s increasing vulnerability to catastrophic droughts, wildfires, severe storms, and flooding, as the climate crisis intensifies. The newsletter is based on the conviction that direct action is the best antidote to alienation, apathy, disillusionment, and despair. The model is Brad Johnson’s Hill Heat newsletter, which takes the same approach at the national level, covering congressional hearings and meetings in Washington D.C. Last month, First Nations published two resources designed to support Native American ranchers in the development of conservation plans: 🟠 Conservation Planning Curriculum for Native American Ranchers: https://bit.ly/4f0djv1 🟠 Conservation Planning Curriculum: Workbook: https://bit.ly/4f0pw2Y These resources were made possible through the Advancing Native Ecological Stewardship project, which convened Native natural resources and environmental science professionals, community members, and youth during three “Train-the-Trainer” sessions to facilitate knowledge sharing and capacity building. We hope that these resources will guide Native American ranchers and community members to develop conservation plans that ultimately improve soil health and water quality, strengthen land and natural resources management systems, and prioritize cultural resources protection.

Those of you working on conservation and climate solutions, I know you're thinking ahead about ecology, the environment, climate, etc. But are you thinking ahead about grant opportunities? The National Association of Conservation Districts hosts an annual grant program, beginning in August (est.) in which they fund "a series of locally-led pilot projects across the U.S. and territories" that conserves 430,000 acres and reduces/sequesters 1.5 million metric tons of CO2e. They're "seeking projects that foster private-public partnerships, scale implementation of climate-smart practices, advance Measurement, Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MMRV), and support producer participation in resulting markets." Note that projects must involve partnerships with one or more conservation districts or Tribal conservation districts. Does that sound like your project? Only thing I'll add here, in response to Professor Samuel's claim today that the environment sector should "take a chill pill" https://lnkd.in/gqsyvgqq, is that the Australian government's so-called #NaturePositive plan (https://lnkd.in/g6S9bWwb) is not an adequate response to the #extinctioncrisis. It outlines a HEAVILY watered-down version of "nature positive" which ignores the international goal of stopping nature loss by 2030 under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and explicitly seeks to allow the loss of some species and ecosystems in exchange for others (trading koalas for regent honeyeater) under the premise this is "better overall" for the environment.
