Last month, I had the privilege of speaking with Deloitte's Chief Learning Officer, Anthony Stephan on The Edge of Work podcast. As a Deloitte alum and with many friends in the learning organization, I was excited to learn more about what's at the top of my mind from the Chief Learning Officer for Deloitte's learning business. During our chat, we covered everything, from his "100 in 100" initiative, Deloitte's focus on technical (hot skills) and human skills (Enduring skills) and some of the key initiatives they are running internally (and in some cases, externally) around them. One of my favorite parts was digging into how Anthony sees the hallmarks of a great learning culture that permeates the norms and ways of working of a professional services organization (think apprenticeship) evolving for today's world of work. 📚 Training sessions are like a breath of fresh air! 🌬️ This week, we held a short but impactful training session on optimizing the closing & reporting process with our newest team member, Sonja, who recently joined us from Deloitte Denmark and Heiðdís Rún, one of our original rockstars. They reminded our consultants of a simple yet crucial principle: analyze the problem before offering the solution. I reckon that everyone can fall into the pit of jumping headfirst into "fix-it" mode quicker than a squirrel on a caffeine high and - after all, we don't want to be like that person who tries to fix a leaky sink with a sledgehammer. By taking the time to analyze the problem, we provide more effective solutions that truly meet our clients' needs. Today marks the launch of our EY Executive Layer Learning Summit! Today we commence our Executive Learning Summit where we will be hosting 37 classes covering 13 topics (across ‘wellbeing’, ‘diversity, equity and inclusion’ and ‘skill development’). An upfront thank you to my team Bob Pearson, Karen Becker, Kirsten Paterson and Tisha Emrick have worked diligently and creatively to pull this all together.   We thought long and hard about the branding around this particular Summit and landed on ‘Innovate and Illuminate’ which feels fresh and relevant to today’s learners.  The concept of Innovate is about introducing new ideas and practices to inspire creative thinking and adaptability, while Illuminate focuses on providing the knowledge and insights necessary for a deep understanding of the topics at hand. And not only do the topics themselves speak to this theme but the learning approaches do also, to ensure, we are meeting a variety of learning styles and needs (from theory sessions, to facilitated social learning through to practice and application sessions). In addition many of our sessions are aligned to the ‘World Economic Forum’ identified skills of the future;  Problem Solving, Creative Thinking, Emotional Agility and Empathy to name just a few we are featuring. I’ve no doubt the next 6 weeks will be busy, but we will draw from the energy of our learners and love to help answer those better questions! #Shape the future with confidence by investing in building new skills and knowledge today. 

Lots of food for thought from day one of #learninglive. A couple of the sessions I attended focused on performance (as opposed to learning). Is this simply a matter of semantics or does the difference matter? My feeling is that the performance narrative is something that enables L&D to broaden its remit beyond learning (improved performance as the outcome, learning just one of many inputs) and is something senior execs will take more notice of. The opening session included a Q&A based on questions suggested by, and voted on, by delegates. The most popular was around finding time to prioritise learning in the organisation. Would this challenge diminish if it was framed around prioritising time to improve performance? The panellists from Deloitte running the session said that the number one barrier to learning in Deloitte is having the space and time to learn. This is a big challenge for learning teams and organisations especially at a time when there is so much to learn in terms of digital skills and the need for reskilling/upskilling. Anthony R. Stephan is the Chief Learning Officer at Deloitte. With responsibility for developing over 180,000 employees globally, Anthony has spent the past two years in his role embarking on transforming the learning business at Deloitte to evolve the organization to continue to deliver and drive business impact. During our conversation, Anthony shared insights from his first two years in the role, including how a 100-day listening sprint shaped his strategy. He delves into the launch of Project 120, a $1.4 billion investment in skills development, the shifts in the strategy and ways of working the L&D business has made at Deloitte. Finally, Anthony also explores the future of apprenticeship and milestone programs, emphasizing both “hot skills” (technical) and enduring skills (human skills) that they are focused on at Deloitte.
