Daily hats of a #DataProtection / #Privacy professional,  or Why I wrote the series on Mandatory / Recommended/ Useful / Ideal / Utopic skills for Data Protection / Privacy professionals This old post of mine reminded me why discussions on the skills needed by a DPO or and other professional in Data Protection/ Privacy domain. In real life, here is a huge gap between what's requested by GDPR from a DPO (especially in SMEs), management expectations and what a DPO can actually do. In the process of aggregating the data from this series into a single document, I realized that the skills/ knowledge which I've gathered would definitely exceed (by far) the perceived value (or the financial package) of a DPO (maybe excepting external consultants/ fractional DPOs).

Understand the six lawful bases:   - Consent   - Contract   - Legal obligation   - Vital interests   - Public task   - Legitimate interests 2. Analyze the specific processing activity:   - What is the purpose of processing?   - What type of data is involved?   - Who are the data subjects? 3. Consider the context and relationship with data subjects:   - Are they customers, employees, or the general public?   - What are their reasonable expectations? 4. Assess necessity and proportionality:   - Is the processing truly necessary for the stated purpose?   - Is there a less intrusive way to achieve the same goal? 5. Evaluate the impact on individuals' rights and freedoms:   - How might the processing affect the data subjects?   - Are there any risks or negative consequences? 6. Check for any specific legal requirements or prohibitions:   - Are there any sector-specific regulations to consider? 7.
