This morning, we have celebrated the second #PluggedIn event to explore some of the key topics in the #EnergyTransition, in this case, #SupplyChain #Risk and #Labour #Skills shortage, in our GHD Sydney headquarters. My colleagues Helen Barbour-Bourne and Richard Fechner have facilitated an outstanding panel including Emily Scivetti from Oceanex Energy, Amir Jesmi from GAMUDA, Catherine Blaine from NSW Ports, and #AdamWest from TAFE NSW. They have shared insights and food for thought around the big challenges Australia is facing in terms of workforce and supply chain in the energy transition: - 30% increase in the #CleanEnergy #Workforce by 2033 - 1/3 of the clean energy workforce is born outside of Australia - 75% of clean energy jobs could be in regional Australia by 2035 - With the necessary #PumpedStorage projects needed in the #EnergyTransition, securing a stable and skilled workforce in regional Australia for projects that last many years is a big challenge - There is a need to engage with women, indigenous and other under-represented groups in the energy transition workforce - Leveraging the talent needed in Australia for the energy transition must be a team effort involving the state and federal governments, private and public stakeholders. It cannot be on the shoulders of contractors. - Leveraging the talent needed in Australia for the energy transition must be planned and constitutes an investment for the future generations - Australia is competing with North America and Europe in the energy transition supply chain - #Procurement and supply chain risks cannot be pushed down to the #contractors anymore - The lowest cost does not mean the best option anymore; we need to factor in #quality, #innovation and #SocialValue - With fixed prices for the supply chain, we run the risk of compromising on quality and maintenance - 95% of the import goods get to Australia by sea - Australia has the natural resources to produce a large part of the components necessary for the energy transition - Australia has a great opportunity to become an exporter instead of an importer in the energy transition - The Australian ports could channel that supply chain outflow #PowerofCommitment #Pluggedin #deriskingtheenergytransition #PumpedStorage #CleanEnergy A shoutout to Emily Vickery, Sofie Mason-Jones and the rest of the team for this excellent event

It was great to be part of the dialog today in Sydney re the resource availability dilemma facing the decarbonisation of Australia. A key take-away for me was the need for a Team Australia approach to compete and lead in our resourcing and supply chain needs (as we are part of a global financial, labour and supply chain market). A fragmented approach driven by state Vs state behaviours will not drive optimal results as a nation. And what about the ideas of reinstating manufacturing in target sectors linked to our critical minerals rich resources?

Exciting insights from the recent energy transition experience exchange in Eastern Greater Poland! 🌍 Our partner Stowarzyszenie Na Rzecz Spółdzielni Socjalnych  (SNRSS) organized a series of meetings, where representatives from the Berlin Comparative Research Network (CRN) shared their successful sustainable development initiatives. It was a fantastic opportunity to delve into the cooperation between local government and organizations, as well as the implementation of innovations in the transition process. These gatherings play a pivotal role for those navigating the complexities of energy transition. The exchange of experiences provides a valuable source of information, aiding those involved in creating and implementing solutions. The emphasis on equity in the transition was particularly noteworthy, underlining the importance of fostering accessible and inclusive conditions for all groups affected by the process. Energized Hubs (EH) are transformative centers of empowerment created by Mozambican Women of Energy (MWE) and our Partner Fundação Carlos Morgado based on the Girafa Solar concept, bringing light, knowledge, and opportunity to underserved areas. These hubs, powered by renewable energy technologies like solar, are designed to meet the specific needs of each community, providing not just electricity, but also access to information, skills training, and leisure activities. The impact of EHs goes beyond just access to clean energy; they are catalysts for community development and growth. By equipping hubs with clean energy sources and providing training in crucial skills, EHs aim to enhance livelihoods and community resilience. This approach is grounded in a theory of change that prioritizes local empowerment and sustainable development, fostering trust and a sense of belonging within the community. However, the success of EHs relies on several key assumptions, including peace and stability in project areas, receptiveness from local communities and authorities, active engagement from local partners, and the effective transfer and application of skills by beneficiaries. With these elements in place, EHs have the potential to be not just sources of energy but beacons of hope and progress for off-grid communities. We need to protect jobs and social wellbeing during the energy transition! Have you heard of the World Energy Council? Its a long established not for profit independent and impartial forum that brings together energy leaders and practitioners Its focus is to achieve just energy transitions in communities around the world. One example is in Aberdeen and in 2023 they published part 1 of a 3 part study This summary report brings key insights from the Phase I outcomes: 1. An engagement report on “Aberdeen Citizens’ Perspectives for a Clean and Just Energy Transition”, which explores the diverse community perspectives of Aberdeen’s citizens, capturing levels of energy literacy and engagement with a clean and just energy transition. 2. A rapid evidence review, which suggests leading global practices of clean and just energy transitions, structured around three key learning areas: A. Achieving equity – Clean and Just Energy Transitions enable transformational change to create wealth and improve livelihoods, while recognising the needs and diversities across all community groups. B. Buiding resilience – Clean and Just Energy Transitions withstand shocks and responds to change without putting socio-economic wellbeing at risk. C. Empowering communities – Clean and Just Energy Transitions promote participatory processes and collective wealth building and strategies to meet the needs voiced by community members. Jobs and Employment and broader Socio-Economic opportunities are understood as cross-cutting objectives that are relevant to each of the three key learning areas. Why should there be more diversity within sectors such as construction? How to address the problem through assisted technology solutions?
