Tittle: " Stem vs Steam " The debate between STEM and STEAM education has been a prominent topic in educational circles for years. STEM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, has traditionally been the focus of educational initiatives aimed at preparing students for careers in these fields. However, the addition of "A" for Arts in STEAM emphasizes the importance of integrating creative disciplines into education, recognizing the significance of arts and design in innovation and problem-solving. Proponents of STEM argue that a strong foundation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics is essential for meeting the demands of the modern workforce, particularly in fields like computer science and engineering. On the other hand, advocates for STEAM believe that incorporating arts education not only fosters creativity and critical thinking but also enhances students' ability to communicate and collaborate effectively, essential skills in any profession. Ultimately, the STEM vs. STEAM debate highlights the ongoing conversation about the best approach to preparing students for success in a rapidly evolving world. TalentServe #internship #training

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education focuses primarily on these core disciplines, aiming to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed for careers in fields such as engineering, computer science, and mathematics. It emphasizes logical thinking, problem-solving, and technical proficiency. STEM education has been crucial in addressing the demand for skilled workers in these areas, driving innovation and technological advancement. On the other hand, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) integrates the arts into STEM education, recognizing the value of creativity and design in innovation and problem-solving. By incorporating disciplines such as visual arts, music, and design, STEAM encourages interdisciplinary thinking and holistic approaches to challenges. It emphasizes not only technical proficiency but also creativity, critical thinking, and expression, fostering well-rounded individuals capable of tackling complex problems from multiple perspectives. While STEM and STEAM share common goals of preparing students for the demands of the modern workforce and fostering innovation, STEAM expands the focus beyond technical skills to include creativity and artistic expression. Both approaches have their merits, and the choice between STEM and STEAM often depends on educational objectives, student interests, and the specific needs of industries and society. Ultimately, both STEM and STEAM play essential roles in shaping the next generation of innovators and problem solvers, each contributing unique perspectives to the educational landscape. In the realm of education, the acronyms STEM and STEAM often take center stage, representing two distinct yet interconnected approaches to learning. STEM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, emphasizes the importance of these core subjects in the curriculum. It aims to cultivate critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and innovation, preparing students for careers in rapidly evolving fields such as robotics, computer science, and biotechnology. However, the STEAM movement advocates for an expansion of this framework by integrating Art into the equation, transforming STEM into STEAM. By incorporating artistic elements, such as creativity, design thinking, and visual communication, STEAM seeks to foster well-rounded individuals who can thrive in interdisciplinary environments and address complex challenges with a holistic perspective. While STEM focuses on the foundational pillars of science and technology, STEAM recognizes the intrinsic value of the arts in promoting innovation and enriching the learning experience. By bridging the gap between disciplines, STEAM encourages collaboration, experimentation, and the exploration of diverse perspectives. It acknowledges that creativity and innovation are not confined to one domain but emerge at the intersection of different fields. Therefore, educators and policymakers are increasingly embracing the STEAM approach as a means to cultivate versatile skill sets and empower students to become lifelong learners and innovators. In essence, whether one advocates for STEM or champions STEAM, the overarching goal remains the same: to equip the next generation with the knowledge, skills, and mindset to thrive in a complex and interconnected world. Elizabeth Jo is a UMass Institute for Applied Life Sciences Core Summer Intern in the Elaine Marieb Center for Nursing and Engineering Innovation. She is a Computer Engineering Major in the College of Engineering, UMass Amherst leading the way by training a robot how to perform a requested task. Want to have a robot move and pick up objects? ✔ Learn the Robot Operating System (ROS). ✔ Create publisher nodes in Python – this sends movement information from the keyboard (publisher). ✔ Create subscriber nodes in Python – this receives information to move the robot’s wheels (subscriber). ✔ Then see how it controls the robot Stretch to move and pick up objects. What’s the goal? Why are you doing this? 🔷 Instruct Stretch the robot to pick up objects at Baystate Health and support nurses in healthcare. Leverage technology to help with tasks that require accuracy but perhaps not a human hand. I finally made it to University of Cambridge. When I couldn’t get the grades I desired to in Grade 12, my activities came to a standstill and all I had was a kerchief laden with unstoppable tears. That’s when I learnt that life is shaped like a wave where there are some moments we reach the crest but on the flip side they are equally those moments where there is also a trough. I made a resolution to once again make it possible to spark my inner wisdom through the four years of under graduation. With an aim to not just focus on getting good grades, I also made it a habit to focus on the co - curricular activities as well. I started looking for as many internships as possible to make myself flexible not only in the academic arena but also in the industrial sector as well. Having this idea in mind, I used to do as many internships during my breaks to equip myself. Throughout these four years of under graduation, I have learnt so much from these internships by gaining knowledge across various domains of computer science. Having undergone various projects across a spectrum of domains, I realised now it was time to delve deeper into the subject, not in a shallow way but through a deeper study. I tried my hands in publishing a research article in machine learning which was a mix of basics and advanced techniques involved. I got inspired by the intensive nature of research and the sheer joy it gives me. From Grade 7, I had aspired to study abroad and gain the most research exposure possible to keep my interest in research alive. I was very particular with the fact that I only wanted to join a university and a course that perfectly aligns with my choice of domain. Whilst preparing for the application process, I studied a handful of research papers each focusing on different branches of computer science. This was when I read a paper related to “Digital Signal Processing”. I was inspired my the application of innovative techniques in the field of signal processing. Inspired by the sheer relativity I could feel with this course, I decided I would want to explore this course in depth. There were only a handful of universities that offered this course and Cambridge was one amongst it. It was still a moment of surrealism when I received the call for interview. I was so grateful to have had the most amazing experience with my interviewer Prof. Jonathan Crowcroft, who has been a game changer in computer networks especially with his work on turing switches. It was then a waiting game for a month before I received the golden news of my offer on May 16. I still remember that day where I was over the moon when I received this news. I am also grateful to the Pro Vice - Chancellor of my bachelor’s university who gave his precious time towards interacting with me and giving me best wishes for my journey at Cambridge. I want to thank my family who have been supportive. I also want to thank Wolfson College for offering me their membership and accommodation.
