Why am I not onboard with a 100% shift to electric vehicles? Here are the facts: TRUE: An EV may have to travel thousands (even tens of thousands) of miles to break even for CO2. TRUE: EVs may have little or no CO2 advantage over the car you already drive. TRUE: The ban on the internal combustion engine is counter-productive to the decarbonization mission. TRUE: It’s not the internal combustion engine that’s the problem, it’s the fuel. TRUE: No car is a “green machine”. But different cars provide different shades of green. TRUE: Hybrids are the fastest way to reduce CO2 from transportation. TRUE: EVs displace carbon (and other) emissions from roads to power plants. TRUE: Heavier vehicles produce more tire/road particulates. EVs are generally heavier than conventional vehicles. TRUE: EVs pose a paradox. Drive them more to pay back the battery production CO2 penalty. Drive them less so that you don’t create too much CO2 from charging. TRUE: It’s tough to own an EV if you live in an apartment or don’t have convenient charging infrastructure nearby. TRUE: Regulating vehicles at the tailpipe is the wrong way to do it. LCA should be used. TRUE: These statements don’t apply to everyone. Results may vary depending on your grid or if you create your own electricity. In other words, an EV may be the best option for you (and it is in many places in the world in terms of GHG emissions). *Here an EV means a full battery electric vehicle. #thefutureiseclectic

Dead on. An EV is not the best option for all situations. Personal, hybrids are the way to go for the vast majority of the population, since many do a lot of city driving, where hybrids shine. If we want to decarbonize, hybrid technology is the better choice/ intermediate technology while we perfect the EV.

Cut the cord with petrol and fast-forward to the future of mobility - Electric Vehicles(EVs)! Major price reductions are hitting the EV market, making it even more attractive to make the switch. We all know that the running cost of a vehicle is a significant factor when choosing a new set of wheels. Consider this: on average, you might spend between Rs 7-8 per kilometre driving a small petrol car. Conversely, in an EV, it costs approximately Rs 1 to 1.5 per kilometre. That's a huge saving! Let's break it down further. If you're driving about 1500 Km a month, with an efficiency of 12 Km per litre at a petrol cost of Rs 97 per litre, you're looking at around Rs 12,000 spent on fuel. Imagine the money you could save with an EV. Making the switch to EVs not only contributes to a greener planet but also weighs lighter on your pocket. ‘The analysis shows that simply running on electricity is not enough to guarantee that a car is “green” — its weight, battery size and overall efficiency matter, too. While a gigantic electric truck weighing thousands of pounds might be better than a gas truck of the same size, both will be outmatched by a smaller, efficient gas vehicle. And the more huge vehicles there are on the road, the harder it will be for the United States to meet its goal of zeroing out emissions by 2050.‘

Go the distance ⚡️🚗 The misinformation about electric vehicles has increased at an alarming rate- especially given how important they are to decarbonise road transport. Yet there are wonderful fact checks such as this recent one from Carbon Brief (https://lnkd.in/dFJmJbDr) In the fourth quarter of 2023, 18% of new cars sold were electric (https://lnkd.in/eWAmygjb) and while there might be a few bumps on the road, we need to accelerate the deployment of EVs. One of the criticisms against EVs is that they do not offer the same range as gasoline or diesel powered cars and thus cannot replace them. But the charging infrastructure is expanding fast (including fast chargers) as shown for Europe in a recent report by Transport & Environment (T&E). And the progress in battery technology (and the installation of bigger batteries) is increasing the available range. The graph below, taken from a recent article in Bloomberg, shows the number of car models available in the US offering a range higher than 480 km (sorry US/UK friends but I am NOT switching to miles…). So much for range anxiety… Note that given that most trips are short distance, there is a real question on battery size (lower size means less metals) and fast chargers help a lot. We associate Electric Vehicles (EVs) with clean/sustainable mobility, but just how much better are they than your average everyday ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) car? Take a look at some interesting statistics: - Replacing an ICE car with an EV can help avoid 2-tonnes of CO2 annually. To put that into perspective, you would need the annual absorption power of ~91 trees to offset the annual emissions of a single car. Thats huge! Imagine how much a city can benefit from a 10% increase in EVs.   - The energy cost of a car is estimated to be more than Rs 6/km whereas that of an EV is only about Rs 0.5/km. Gas costs ~Rs 100/litre. EVs will no doubt be more economically beneficial for city and short-range drivers.   - Perhaps most important of all, maintenance cost of EVs is around 30%-40% lower can their ICE counterparts. an ICE car has over 2000 moving parts, whereas an EV has about 20.   While the biggest hurdle to large-scale adoption is price (1.3-2x the cost of an ICE), current government initiatives such as the FAME scheme, provide subsidies to lower purchase cost of EVs.  The more you know!! Electric Vehicles. Friday thoughts. Electric Vehicles have surged in popularity and no matter which side of the engine debate you sit on, there is no denying we're seeing more and more EVs on the road. At the heart of this shift is the growing concern over climate change and the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, of which the transportation sector is a significant contributor. We must remember, the absence of tailpipe emissions is the key environmental advantage of EVs and the reason we first saw them become popular. The absence of tailpipe emissions contributes to better air quality, especially in urban areas, which in turn is defining government policy worldwide, because, who wouldn't want better air quality, right? The automotive industry's commitment to electrification is evident in the increasing number of EV models available, with some manufacturers making only EV vehicles, this, along with the desire to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle, has driven consumer demand. Technology and manufacturing methods have improved over the years, batteries are taking vehicles further. The cost of batteries, which constitute a significant portion of an EVs price has been steadily decreasing, making them more financially accessible to a broader audience.
