Athian (athian.ai) announced the first sale of verified carbon credits to Dairy Farmers of America (DFA), the largest U.S. milk marketing cooperative. Known as “insetting,” DFAs supply chain purchase from a dairy in Texas utilized Athian's protocol to generate carbon credits via feed management reduction of enteric methane emissions. This coupled with recent favorable developments at FDA to speed feed additives targeting enteric emissions to market, signal great opportunities for agriculture to lead the way in voluntary carbon market development. For its part, DFA has announced an aggressive goal of GHG emission reduction across its supply chain of 30% by 2030.

Byproducts: These include materials from food processing industries, such as brewers' grains, distillers' grains, and soybean hulls. Forages: A variety of grasses, legumes, and other plants can be used as forage, including alfalfa, clover, and even some weeds. Agricultural Residues: Crop byproducts like straw, cornstalks, and rice hulls can be incorporated into livestock diets. Novel Sources: This category includes more experimental options like insects, algae, and even certain types of seaweed. Benefits of Alternative Feeds Reduced reliance on traditional crops: This can help alleviate pressure on land resources and reduce competition with human food production. Cost-effectiveness: Alternative feeds can often be cheaper than traditional options. Improved sustainability: Many alternative feeds have a lower environmental impact than conventional feedstuffs. Enhanced nutritional value: Some alternative feeds offer unique nutritional benefits, such as increased protein or fiber content. Challenges and Considerations Nutritional balance: It's crucial to ensure that alternative feeds provide the necessary nutrients for livestock health. Palatability: Some animals may be reluctant to consume certain alternative feeds. Consistency: The quality and availability of alternative feeds can vary. Regulatory approval: In some cases, using certain alternative feeds may require specific permits or approvals.

The farming stage, and in particular cow rearing for milk production, is the most impacting stage of dairy products in terms of greenhouse gas emissions (as well as nutrient pollution and land use). This is due to enteric fermentation (the microbial decomposition of feed in the rumen of the animal that is released as flatus and belch) and fertilizers used for feed production which release methane and nitrous oxide respectively. In addition, dairy products require large amounts of raw milk and energy for processing. Butter, in particular, requires up to 10-20 kg raw milk per kg of butter. (3)

Insect fertilizers have about the same quality as commercial fertilizer products without having the negative aspects of #chemical_fertilizers. Intensive #crop_production requires many fertilizer inputs, which are expensive and inaccessible to some farmers, especially in low to middle-income countries. Furthermore, the production of mineral fertilizers is energy-consuming, and their use in farming is increasingly being regarded as unsustainable. Therefore, exploring the black soldier fly as a novel fertilizer offers significant benefits to farmers. # 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬 ➮ Growth in the #Organic Food Industry ➮ Growing Awareness About the use of Insects to Convert Waste into Organic Fertilizer ➮ Growing #Waste_Production from Restaurants, #Agriculture, and Food & Drink Industries ➤ 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬 – https://lnkd.in/gQYmN-RQ # 𝗞𝗲𝘆_𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀: Ÿnsect (SAS), Protix B.V., Enterra Feed Corporation, InnovaFeed, EnviroFlight, LLC, Nutrition Technologies Group, Entomo Farms, BioflyTech, nextProtein, Hexafly, and Protenga Pte.
