The anchor, a heavy metal device, is connected to the ship by a chain or cable. When the crew decides to anchor, they lower the anchor overboard. Gravity pulls the anchor down, and its flukes dig into the seabed, providing a firm hold. The length of the anchor chain is carefully controlled to ensure stability and prevent drifting. Dropping the anchor is crucial for keeping the ship stationary in open water, avoiding collisions, and ensuring safety during loading, unloading, or waiting for docking. 🚢 Successful Inclining Test for the ‘ Emerald Duchess’   Last week, we completed the inclining test on the 2000 m³ trailing suction hopper dredger 'Emerald Duchess' together with and for our client Neptune Marine, with final ownership by PD Ports, and under the supervision of Lloyd’s Register. As the design, engineering, and stability calculations were performed by DEKC Maritime, this inclining test was crucial to determine the weight and center of gravity for the "As Built" ship.   🔧 The testing process included: - Inspecting all tanks (and bilges) to determine if they were empty, dry, or partially filled. - Sounding the partially filled tanks. - Listing all items to be added, deducted, or moved from the total weight. - Reading the hull draft marks. - Measuring the water density. - Shifting the inclining test weights from port to starboard and back in 8 steps. - Recording the movement of two long pendulums at each step. - Verifying the inclining weights with a calibrated load cell (captured in pictures). - Documenting the results in a report, signed by all attendees.   This successful execution is a testament to the meticulous planning and collaboration between all parties involved.   #MarineEngineering #ShipDesign #StabilityTest #IncliningTest #Maritime #EngineeringExcellence
