Difference Between Medical Laboratories Then and Now Based on Technical Staff Requirements Based on My Experience, In the Past: When starting their careers, Medical Laboratory Technicians/Technologists focused on developing certain abilities within themselves, such as: Strong Analytical Skills, Technical Proficiency, Attention to Detail Scientific Knowledge, Problem-Solving Skills, Communication Skills Ethical Conduct, Manual Dexterity, Time Management, Continuous Learning, Teamwork, Quality Control etc. Quality control was a chapter every Lab Technician considered their holy grail, studying it diligently. Many aspired to become Quality Managers or enter the Quality Department. The obsession with quality control and accurate reporting among laboratories was at another level. Laboratories would cross-check any abnormal result at any level without considering extra costs. Even smaller labs would cross-check creatinine values 2-3 times if it was even 0.1 mg/dL higher than expected. Equipment validations would take months, and every small detail like inter-assay, intra-assay, AMR, accuracy, precision, CV, and SD was properly scrutinized. All these details held significant importance.

Aseptic Operators Working in a cleanroom under GMP isn’t easy, you have your gowning to consider, your movements, your equipment. Qualifying aseptic operators poses a significant challenge, not because it’s extremely difficult but because it requires great care and attention to detail. Training The more relevant experience the person has, the easier the training and qualification will be. You would ideally like to hire an aseptic operator with at least five years of experience in GMP production. When a person is hired, he or she will enter into the training program. For new and existing aseptic operators, there should be a continuous training program on theoretical and practical GMP aspects, including microbiology and hygiene. Only having aseptic operators re-watch the same online training course every month is not a suitable curriculum for an aseptic operator. Consider the trends, consider operator input; what are the problems at the moment? Any area’s for improvement? Any new techniques or equipment the operators should be aware of? the employees trained to ensure that they take adequate precautions to prevent cross-contamination when they pass from one area to another? Gowning Operators must always wear gowning according to the appropriate area classification. Good personal hygiene is the foundation of proper gowning in GMP manufacturing environments. Even though it should be common knowledge we still see make sure there is a cheat-sheet on GMP gowning procedures in the gowning area and that it’s in line with the gowning SOP. Behavior People should move slowly and deliberately; body parts should be kept out of the laminar airflow, and gowns should be kept as clean as possible.Necessary product manipulations should be approached in a way that avoids compromising sterility. Only qualifying your operators through a one-off training program is not accepted; many systems, people, and checks can make or break a cleanroom operator qualification trajectory. I worked as a Medical Laboratory Technician for over ten years early in my career. I had the privilege of working alongside some of the nicest, smartest people I've ever met (and still keep in touch with!), and there was always one unifying frustration amongst us anytime we got a new piece of instrumentation: "Who the heck designed this thing?!?!?". It was very clear to us that a Lab Tech was not included in the design process, as many times routine tasks like changing out a reagent or emptying waste was cumbersome and time consuming. A small tweak here or there could have saved time for the end user if it had been considered during the design process. My previous role was focused on procedure and process development, and continuous improvement of in-use methods. While managing multiple projects where new procedures are created and old ones are streamlined, my intent is to always create the best possible process for the end user while ensuring all stakeholder's needs are considered. It's amazing how much buy-in you can get from a team when they are brought into the creation process, even when concessions have to be made to align with the needs of multiple stakeholders. What processes do you have in your organization that could use a refresh, and who are you going to for input? I hope that you will always start with the end-user in mind and capture their feedback during the process. They are the ones executing every day, and they know best any pain points that should be addressed!

Accreditation Agencies: Organizations like the College of American Pathologists (CAP), National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL)or the Joint Commission assess laboratories against established quality standards and grant accreditation. Healthcare Providers: Physicians and healthcare professionals rely on laboratory results to make diagnostic and treatment decisions. They play a role in ensuring that laboratories provide accurate and timely information.
