Climate Lab to Create Crops for "Tomorrow's Atmosphere Today" Rose was thrilled to assist the University of Essex in delivering their unique plant lab, designed to place researchers at the forefront of the fight against climate change by creating crops for "tomorrow's atmosphere today." Our skilled team reconfigured the space to include a new communal corridor and finished areas for the specialised vertical and growth farms, complete with new lab benches, decorations, and M&E installations, including compressed air and reverse osmosis water systems. The new flagship facility at the University of Essex will enable scientists to adapt plants for a hotter, drier planet as food security faces increasing threats. It features a state-of-the-art, commercially standard vertical farm, an indoor field that can replicate real environments from around the globe, and suites that simulate a warming world by allowing researchers to adjust CO2 concentration and temperature levels. Advanced computer plant scanning technology will monitor plant growth and identify precise changes in photosynthesis. This research will be supported by AI and robotics, which will develop new ideas, technologies, and strategies to predict changes in agriculture and the natural world. The Smart Technology Experimental Plant Suite (STEPS) will devise strategies to optimize plant performance while working towards net zero emissions. It will also foster connections within the community and develop relationships in agriculture, horticulture, and technology businesses. The facility builds on the work of the influential Essex Plant Innovation Centre (EPIC), which brings together farmers, technologists, and scientists to improve crop resilience to drought, increase yields, and secure the food chain during extreme weather events. Students will be at the forefront, helping to develop and conduct experiments with the university’s internationally renowned researchers, providing a unique undergraduate experience and training opportunity. Young scientists can now begin their careers in this cutting-edge facility, unique to Essex. This is a story about innovation. It’s a story about the improbable nature of a good idea. It’s a story told through Greek mythology, kitchen appliances, and frozen hamsters. James Lovelock is best known for his “Gaia Hypothesis”. If you are not familiar with the Gaia Hypothesis, you are certainly familiar with the environmental movement it spawned. If you spend any time thinking about the planet and its environment, you have James Lovelock to thank for it. But the idea you would be most familiar with would also be Lovelocks. An idea about thawing frozen hamsters. In the early 1970’s Lovelock proposed that the earth was one, self sustaining biology. That organisms react to their environment. That our planet is a “synergistic and self-regulating, complex system”. He proposed that this interaction perpetuated the conditions for life. Lovelock’s neighbour, the novelist William Golding, suggested naming his theory after Gaia, the Greek deity who personified the Earth in Greek mythology. The Gaia Hypothesis provided a foundation for the emergence of the environmental movement that began in the 1970’s. But Lovelock didn’t start out as an environmentalist. In the 1960’s Lovelock was hired by NASA to explore the question, “Is there was life on Mars?” To do this Lovelock invented a device called the “Electron Capture Detector”. The instrument would eventually be deployed on the Viking Program which visited Mars. However, using the Electron Capture Detector, Lovelock was the first to discover the buildup of CFC’s in Earth’s atmosphere. These CFC’s were burning a hole in the Ozone layer that protected the planet. This resulted in the Montreal Protocol of 1987, banning the use of CFC’s as refrigerants, among other things. Again, Lovelocks ideas turned out to be of immense environmental importance, and quite by accident. But the inadvertent invention of Lovelocks most people are acquainted with came in the 1950’s. At that time, he was a researcher at the National Institute for Medical Research. He was working on a way to revive frozen hamsters. His team had been freezing the rodents and then warming them quickly to see if they could be revived. To do this they had been applying hot surfaces which burned them. Believing this cruel, Lovelock cobbled together a series of contraptions used in radar technology. He then applied the microwave gizmos to the frozen hamsters. And the hamsters popped back to life and started wandering around. Intrigued, Lovelock then did something that would change kitchens forever. He put a potato in the device, cooked it in seconds, and had it for lunch. I invite your comments and thank you for reading.
