Excellent 'Invest Like the Best' podcast episode with the founder and CEO of Etched.ai, a Dash VC portfolio company, Gavin Uberti. Gavin brilliantly speaks to the current AI landscape and the great things he and his team are working on at Etched. Some key takeaways from the interview: AI “super intelligence” is a spectrum, it isn’t binary It’s hard to put AI models into robots because of a lack of training data compared to generative AI where you can feed it millions of images. As for a robot, you can’t break it down that many times before it figures out how to walk, it’s simply not affordable. You need the robot to understand the world without having to break itself 100,000 times. A Multimodal Transformer can take in inputs in almost any modality such as text, images, video, and in the case of robotics, a robotics sensor input. You can train a model on many different inputs. Tesla Self-driving cars use vision transformers but haven’t hit the mainstream for robotics because of the latency. Latency is the delay before a transfer of data begins following an instruction for its transfer. The best approach to combat latency is model-specific chips. They’re built by taking the transformer model and burning it into the silicon. If we want to bring this initial delay down, we’re going to need chips that have way more computing capability and can use that efficiently. This will take us closer to real-time AI.
