This article highlights three critical challenges in hospital retrofitting: 1. Retrofitting vs. Rebuilding: Given costs, hidden risks, and the need for future-proofing, rebuilding may actually be a more viable option. 2. Time Constraints: With the 2030 deadline approaching, projects that didn’t start years ago are at risk of running out of time. 3. Future-Readiness: After costly retrofits, will these hospitals be adequate for future needs? This brings us back to the initial question—should they have been rebuilt instead? https://lnkd.in/g__jb6ar

One of the great exercises challenging the status quo in regards to sustainability. A large number of Theatres are used significantly less or not at all for long periods of time over night, but to maintain compliance with ventilation and infection control, ventilation systems in particular have traditionally been run 24/7/365 in order to maintain conditions as verified. The project to look into how we reduce the unnecessary energy consumption this 24/7 equipment running results in, AND ensure we maintain all clinical and ventilation compliance ready for the next use of the Theatre, is a challenge I know the team will achieve. #notno-how? #findingaway #allenergysavingscounts
The NHS in England is responsible for 4-5% of our country’s carbon emissions, making it a significant polluter and user of natural resources. Reducing this impact is crucial, yet efforts are often hindered by a nationwide evidence gap. Through the Connecting for Change programme, UCLPartners has united teams from across UCLH to develop actionable evidence for NHS trusts to reduce their carbon footprint. Professor Ian Eames from the Faculty of Engineering Science and Dr Anne Symons from the Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction are focused on reducing the energy consumption of operating theatres. Dr Jonny Groome, a paediatric anaesthetic consultant, evaluated operating theatre ventilation systems to identify opportunities to switch systems to ‘stand-by’ or ‘shut down’ modes when not in use, thus conserving energy. 🚀A fascinating webinar by Esri UK that showcased how advanced GIS technologies are transforming property management and location intelligence. 🌍 Here are some key takeaways .... 🔹Heathrow Airport Transformation: Esri demonstrated the Heathrow Space Manager, a system built on ArcGIS, which has revolutionised how Heathrow manages its complex site. Utilising dashboards, APIs, mobile mapping technologies, and more, the system provides a clear and simplistic way to manage chaotic datasets. Notably, the Experience Builder was used in a unique way to create an indoor model of the airport, highlighting the importance of efficient data management in a bustling international hub. 🔹Airedale General Hospital's Adoption: Airedale General Hospital has adopted a similar method to monitor and manage key structural components. Built in 1968, a recent survey identified under-load walls and roof panels. The Esri suite allows the team to digitally manage and monitor RAAC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) repairs efficiently, leveraging mobile and indoor capabilities. This has increased efficiency in survey, monitoring, and maintenance by 50%, with simplified reporting and dashboard visualisation. Additionally, integrating this data with open-source and weather information, as well as using drones to monitor the building, further enhances operational efficiency. 🏥 🔹Future Planning and Optimisation: Catherine Clarke closed the webinar with insights on property solutions and future planning. She showcased how GIS capabilities can bring data into context, aiding the development of digital twins. By merging static data with real-time information, businesses can enhance decision-making and planning. GIS can be used to perform network analysis to identify profitable locations for new investments, understand coverage and capacities, and use weighted information for more contextual analysis. This webinar also highlighted the potential of GIS in property planning and more crucially how we can use geospatial software to optimise any new planning and developments to be in accordance with the new law on BNG credits. 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀 & 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗜𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗔 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲-𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🏥 When designing hospitals in earthquake-prone areas, base isolation is often the go-to solution. Why? Let’s dive into the reasons: 🔹 Functionality During and After Earthquakes Hospitals are critical infrastructure. They must remain operational during emergencies to treat patients and save lives. Base isolation minimizes structural damage and ensures that medical equipment remains functional even during strong shaking. 🔹 Protecting Lives and Equipment Modern hospitals house advanced, sensitive medical devices—CT scanners, MRIs, and life-support systems. These are highly susceptible to vibrations. Base isolation drastically reduces ground motion transferred to the structure, protecting both patients and high-value equipment. 🔹 Comfort and Safety In addition to structural stability, base isolation provides a comfortable environment during an earthquake. By limiting swaying and vibrations, it reduces the stress and panic for staff and patients, ensuring safer evacuations if necessary. 🔹 Cost-Effective in the Long Run While base isolation systems can have higher upfront costs, they prevent costly repairs and operational downtimes after earthquakes. For hospitals, downtime isn't just financial—it's a matter of life and death. So, is base isolation worth it for hospitals? Yes or No? Share your perspective below! ⬇️ #EarthquakeEngineering #StructuralEngineering #SeismicDesign #ResilientInfrastructure

🗣Did you know that our health is linked to the quality of our living spaces? Architects and healthcare professionals both play vital roles in our well-being 👷♀️Architects shape the places we inhabit, influencing our daily lives and emotional health. 👩⚕️Doctors address health problems by treating and managing illnesses. A thoughtfully designed home can prevent more health issues than any single doctor can treat. Remember, health starts at home! Citation: Barton, H., & Grant, M. (2006).
